GEM Enviro Management is a sustainability company built on India’s legal requirement that every producer, importer and brand owner must take responsibility for the packaging waste they put into the market. Founded in 2013 and listed in 2024, it started by helping companies meet their plastic-waste obligations under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules - buying compliance credits from recyclers and selling them to obligated businesses - and has since expanded into a diversified circular-economy platform spanning advisory, infrastructure, scrap trading and digital solutions. The recurring approach is to act as a knowledgeable intermediary: it does not own recycling plants but instead connects a large network of waste collectors and authorised recyclers with the brands that need to prove their waste has been processed, using deep regulatory expertise to navigate a fast-changing rulebook.
Business segments
Three engines at different stages - a compliance-intermediation cash cow, a pair of advisory and infrastructure bets that extend the same relationships, and a cluster of early-stage ventures being built for a future beyond credit trading.
1. EPR compliance and credit facilitation: the core engine that pays the bills
GEM buys EPR certificates from a nationwide network of authorised recyclers and sells them to producers, importers and brand owners who must meet mandatory recycling targets - earning a margin on every credit transferred.
- Paid per credit, not per subscription - revenue comes from one-time sales of EPR certificates and from service fees for collection, channelization and compliance consulting, with repeat business driven by clients’ recurring annual obligations under plastic, e-waste and battery waste rules.
- A marketplace, not a factory - GEM owns no recycling plants; it maintains an inventory of credits sourced from an extensive network of authorised recyclers and waste processors across India, so it can fulfil client demand for instant transfer without waiting for physical processing.
- Regulatory expertise is the real product - an in-house team monitors CPCB and state regulatory updates daily, and enhanced due-diligence checks are applied before every credit transfer, which is how the company navigates compliance requirements that many clients find opaque.
- A concentrated but recurring client base - the company serves multinational and Indian PIBOs across FMCG, beverages, pharma, cement and electricals, including PepsiCo’s bottling franchisee Varun Beverages; the client base grew by 10% in FY24 with 12 new companies signed.
- Scale without smokestacks - roughly 7 lakh metric tonnes of EPR certificates were transferred in FY25, giving GEM about a fifth of India’s plastic EPR credit market, all run from a single office with 51 employees and a PAN-India footprint across 30 states.
2. ESG, BRSR and plastic-credit advisory: selling the sustainability playbook
GEM advises companies on voluntary plastic-credit programmes and mandatory ESG reporting - turning the same regulatory know-how into a fee-based consulting practice.
- Voluntary credits beyond India’s borders - registered as a consultant with VERRA, GEM helps recyclers generate and sell Plastic Credits under international voluntary standards, including an agreement with a Nepal-based recycler targeting over 10,000 metric tonnes of credits per year.
- Mandatory reporting for India’s largest companies - the firm assists clients with SEBI’s compulsory ESG and BRSR disclosures, which apply to the top 1,000 listed companies, advising on sustainable materials, waste reduction and broader ESG strategy.
3. Wastewater and ESG infrastructure: building the physical layer
Through a wholly owned subsidiary, GEM designs and develops treatment facilities and sustainable utility infrastructure - a move from asset-light intermediation into owning and executing projects.
- Water treatment as a service - the company offers wastewater treatment, management and recycling to help industrial and municipal clients meet environmental standards and cut freshwater use.
Ventures under construction
GEM is planting several seeds beyond its core EPR business - scrap trading, solid-waste compliance, digital platforms, eco-industrial parks and a solar EPC stake - each designed to diversify away from pure credit intermediation as the regulatory landscape shifts toward a centralised electronic trading platform.
- Scrap trading - the company is entering physical trading of aluminium, cardboard and industrial waste, leveraging its existing recycler network and PIBO relationships to move beyond credits into direct material transactions.
- Solid-waste compliance support - an expansion into helping municipalities and industries comply with the new Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, extending the core compliance skill from dry waste into the broader solid-waste domain.
- Digital sustainability solutions - a joint venture with Rudrabhishek Infosystem (proposed name Nova GEM Limited, 51% owned by GEM) is building platforms for EPR compliance, plastic-waste traceability, and SaaS tools using AI, IoT and blockchain - a direct response to the CPCB’s proposed centralised electronic trading platform that could disrupt the traditional credit-intermediation model.
- Eco-industrial parks - plans to develop integrated recycling and sustainability infrastructure parks, adding physical asset development to the company’s long-term platform vision.
- Solar EPC associate - GEM is acquiring up to a 26% stake in Solluz Energy Private Limited, a solar-plant EPC and installation firm, for about Rs. 5 crores in cash; the deal has been extended multiple times and is now expected to close by September 2026.
Group structure and partners
GEM Enviro Management is the listed parent, now flanked by a wholly owned infrastructure subsidiary, a majority-owned digital joint venture, and a pending solar associate - a structure assembled entirely since March 2025.
- GEM Green Infra Tech Private Limited - wholly owned subsidiary incorporated in March 2025 to house the wastewater and ESG infrastructure business, with GEM subscribing to its entire paid-up capital in cash.
- Solluz Energy Private Limited - proposed associate (up to 26% stake) engaged in solar EPC and installation; the acquisition for approximately Rs. 5 crores in cash is pending, with completion now targeted by 30 September 2026.
- External partners - GEM is registered with VERRA as a Plastic Credits consultant, assists clients based on guidelines of organizations such as VERRA and PCX Markets, and is a member of the Material Recycling Association of India.
