Nibe Limited is an Indian defence manufacturer that didn’t start out in defence at all - it was a textile company in Surat until a new promoter group took control in March 2020 and pivoted it hard into heavy fabrication, electric vehicles, and eventually complex weapon systems. In the years since, it has relocated to Pune, built three plants, and assembled a portfolio of licensed technologies from India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) alongside international partnerships with firms like Elbit Systems of Israel and Thales of France - all aimed at supplying the Indian armed forces under the government’s self-reliance push. The recurring approach is to secure government-backed technology licences and foreign collaboration agreements, then build the industrial capacity to turn them into domestically manufactured products - a licence-and-localise model that runs through everything from mobile shelters to satellite constellations.
Business segments
A single defence-industrial engine built on licensed government technology and foreign partnerships, now stretching from artillery rockets and ammunition plants to naval electronics and earth-observation satellites - all feeding the same customer: the Indian state.
1. Land systems and ammunition: the factory floor of India’s self-reliance
The company takes DRDO-designed weapon platforms and builds the heavy metal around them - missile launchers, bridges, shelters, and now 155mm artillery shells at a brand-new 200-acre complex.
- Machining what others design - Nibe operates two plants in Pune with vertical machining centres capable of 7-micron accuracy on components up to 16 metres long, which lets it fabricate missile launcher sub-frames, Pinaka rocket platforms, and hull structures for tracked vehicles that few Indian private shops can handle.
- A licence portfolio from the state - the company holds at least ten technology-transfer agreements with DRDO labs, covering products like the Anti-Terrorist Vehicle, 35-metre mountain foot bridges, solar-heated shelters, and the Pinaka Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher, each giving it the right to manufacture and sell to the armed forces for a decade.
- The Shirdi complex is the big bet - a 200-acre integrated defence manufacturing site inaugurated in May 2026 houses a 155mm ammunition shell plant with capacity for 500,000 shells a year, indigenous TNT and RDX plants, and hosted the flag-off ceremony of the Suryastra 300 km rocket system, with ‘Mega Project’ status from the Maharashtra government bringing a 100% industrial promotion subsidy on eligible investment.
- International weapons, Indian production - a technical collaboration with Elbit Systems Land of Israel covers the PULS artillery rocket system, and a term sheet with Sig Sauer of the USA proposes a 51:49 joint venture to manufacture small arms for Indian military and police forces, while a separate agreement with Munition India Limited locks in ten years of export-focused ammunition hardware supply.
- The Indian Army is already buying - a ₹293 crore emergency procurement contract for the Suryastra Universal Rocket Launching System was signed in January 2026, and an export order worth USD 17.52 million from an Israeli technology company for universal rocket launchers followed soon after.
2. Electronics and naval systems: wiring the platforms together
A smaller but connected capability - the Bangalore plant makes the electronic sub-systems, communication gear, and fluid-control equipment that sit inside the larger platforms.
- Electronics manufacturing in Bangalore - the third plant is dedicated to electronics, producing drive units, junction boxes, amplifier units, and power distribution units under purchase orders worth Rs. 50.01 crore from a leading Indian infra and defence company.
- Naval equipment through partnerships - a business agreement with Thales USA makes Nibe the designer, manufacturer, and installer of MM-7000 TACAN navigation equipment for the Indian Navy, while memoranda of understanding with Goa Shipyard, Garden Reach, and Hindustan Shipyard were signed at the Defence Expo.
- Fluid control through a subsidiary - Nibe Meson Naval Limited, now 99.95% owned, manufactures valves, actuators, remote-control systems, and pumps for managing fluids on naval platforms, a niche that sits alongside the parent’s structural fabrication work.
3. Space and satellites: the greenfield bet above the atmosphere
Through a 76%-owned subsidiary, Nibe is assembling an earth-observation satellite constellation - buying an optical satellite from Thales Alenia Space Italia and securing the rights to sell its imagery inside India.
- Bought, not just built - Nibe Space contracted Thales Alenia Space Italia to supply one Gen Optical Satellite (Global 6) for up to USD 19 million, with delivery within nine weeks, and simultaneously signed Blacksky Global to operate and maintain it for two years.
- A consortium for a sovereign constellation - Nibe Space signed memoranda of understanding with Larsen & Toubro, Centum Electronics, AgniKul Cosmos, Thales Alenia Space France, and others to build and operate a private earth-observation constellation, with the plan to lease the constellation and sell imagery and analytics as a service.
- Licensed to sell the data - IN-SPACe, India’s space regulator, registered Nibe Space as a ‘Data Disseminator’ in April 2025, allowing it to sell primary satellite imagery of Indian territory at greater than 30 cm resolution from more than 15 satellites through a constellation arrangement with a global player.
Group structure and partners
A listed parent with six wholly owned subsidiaries - each a legal container for a different technology or customer relationship - and a web of DRDO licences and foreign joint-venture proposals that supply the product pipeline.
- Nibe Limited is the listed entity, operating from Pune with 149 permanent employees as of March 2025, and its business activity falls within a single segment: defence supplies.
- The six wholly owned subsidiaries are Nibe Defence and Aerospace Limited (land, air, and naval systems), Nibe Automobile Limited (electric and amphibious vehicles), Nibe Technologies Private Limited, Karmayogi Manufacturing Private Limited (small-arms assembly), Nibe Meson Naval Limited (fluid-control equipment), and Nibe Space Private Limited (satellites and earth observation).
- Key international partners include Elbit Systems Land (Israel) for rocket artillery, Thales USA and Thales Alenia Space (France/Italy) for naval navigation and satellites, Sig Sauer (USA) for small arms, and HBE (South Korea) for forging facilities - most structured as proposed 51:49 joint ventures or technical collaboration agreements.
- The company’s technology base rests on licensing agreements with at least six DRDO laboratories - VRDE, HEMEL, IRDE, ARDE, and R&DE(E), and an unnamed lab for Solar Heated Shelters - covering shelters, bridges, rocket launchers, and ammunition-related technologies, each typically for a ten-year term with rights to manufacture and sell to Indian government agencies.
