Novelix Pharmaceuticals is an early-stage biopharma company that was born from a complete takeover and reinvention of a dormant trading firm - the new owners bought a listed shell, changed its name and its purpose, and within months had it selling pharmaceutical intermediates and signing technology deals with a German research institute. The recurring approach is to pair its Hyderabad base - a city that produces roughly half of India’s bulk-drug exports - with proprietary processes licensed from specialist partners, so it can enter high-value biotech niches without building every capability from scratch.
Business segments
Two engines at different stages - a pharmaceutical-intermediates business that generates today’s revenue, and a biotechnology bet built on German-licensed microalgae technology - both running from Hyderabad.
1. Pharma intermediates: the revenue engine that came with the takeover
The company buys and sells pharmaceutical intermediates and bulk-drug ingredients from Hyderabad’s bulk-drug cluster, earning revenue on every shipment while it builds its own research capability.
- Trading, not just manufacturing - revenue is recognised when control of goods passes to the customer, typically on shipment or receipt, and the company carries closing stock and unsecured trade receivables, which means it is actively moving product rather than only running plants.
- A lab in the country’s biggest bulk-drug hub - Hyderabad accounts for about 40% of India’s bulk-drug output and roughly half of its bulk-drug exports, and the company has secured a research lab in the Genome Valley life-sciences cluster, putting it inside the same ecosystem as the country’s largest pharma exporters.
- Leased R&D space to move up the value chain - in December 2025 it signed a five-year lease for 3,890 square feet of laboratory space at Neovantage Innovation Park in Genome Valley, effective January 2026, to conduct pharmaceutical and biotech research and formulations work.
- A two-quarter-old business with a predecessor - the pharma segment was formally launched after the company altered its main objects in September 2024, and it established a presence in intermediates within its first two quarters; a smaller pharma segment had existed under the previous management, so the new owners stepped into a category the company already knew.
2. Astaxanthin from microalgae: the biotechnology bet
The company has licensed a German lab’s method for growing Haematococcus pluvialis - the microalgae that produces astaxanthin, a high-value antioxidant - and is scaling it toward commercial production for nutraceutical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical buyers.
- Technology transfer, not in-house discovery - GMBU e.V., a research institution founded in 1992 in Halle, Germany, transfers its proprietary cultivation and scale-up technology to Novelix, while Novelix provides the money, the infrastructure and the Hyderabad facilities.
- From pilot to commercial scale in under a year - a first agreement was signed in October 2025 for pilot production; after that succeeded, a second agreement in June 2026 committed both parties to scaling astaxanthin output to commercial volumes at the Hyderabad research site.
- A product with multiple end-markets - astaxanthin is described as having anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, cardiovascular, ocular and dermatological properties, which opens doors to nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and aquaculture-feed customers across Europe, North America and India.
- Funded by a dedicated capital raise - proceeds from a preferential share issue have been allocated to the lab-scale technology-transfer fee, a land-lease deposit near Gajwel in Siddipet district for microalgae cultivation, glass-reactor systems, quality-control equipment, and the travel costs of the German technical experts.
Group structure and partners
A standalone company with no subsidiaries, controlled by a fine-chemicals partnership and anchored by a German technology collaborator - lean structure, one listing, one campus.
- Controlled by a chemicals partnership - Srinidhi Fine-Chemicals LLP and Mr. Vupparapalli Chandrasekhar Reddy acquired control in March 2024 through a share-purchase agreement and a preferential allotment, then launched a mandatory open offer to public shareholders.
- No subsidiaries, no joint ventures - as of FY25 the company had no subsidiaries, joint ventures or associate companies; its earlier subsidiaries (Trimurthi Foods, Trimurthi Pharmaceuticals, and the associate Curova India) were all divested or exited between 2022 and 2023.
- One technology partner, no equity ties - GMBU e.V. provides the astaxanthin technology under two agreements, but neither party takes any shareholding or special rights in the other.
- Listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange - the shares trade under the ticker NOVELIX (ISIN INE314I01036), with Venture Capital & Corporate Investments Private Limited as the registrar and share-transfer agent, and HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank as the company’s bankers in Hyderabad.
