Spright Agro is a domestic agricultural trader that buys commodities from suppliers across India and sells them onward to wholesalers, food processors and institutional buyers - it does not grow or manufacture what it sells. The business began life in 1994 as a textile company called Kansal Fibres, pivoted entirely into agricultural trading in FY21, and has since shed its original promoters, undergone a 98% capital reduction to wipe out past losses, and rebranded twice to become Spright Agro. The recurring approach is simple: source on order, ship directly from supplier to customer, and keep no long-term commitments on either side - a lean, relationship-driven trading operation concentrated in Gujarat.
Business segments
A single trading engine - buying and selling agricultural commodities across India without owning farms or factories - run from Gujarat with five permanent employees.
1. Agricultural trading: a commission-free middleman moving crops from supplier to buyer
The company buys potatoes, onions, cucumbers and other farm commodities from suppliers, then resells them to wholesalers and processors - it never holds inventory for long, never processes what it trades, and ties itself to neither supplier nor customer through long-term contracts.
- Sourced, not grown - every product the company sells is procured from third-party suppliers across India; it owns no farms, operates no processing plants, and its physical assets amount to computers, container storage units, some farming equipment and software.
- Ship-direct model - for many products the company uses a “bill to ship to” approach, meaning goods move straight from the supplier’s warehouse to the buyer’s location without passing through Spright’s hands, which is why it needs only three warehouses and no cold storage of its own.
- No long-term ties - it places purchase orders only when it anticipates demand and sells on an order-by-order basis; customers can walk away without notice, and the top five customers still made up nearly 39% of sales in FY24.
- Contract manufacturing on the side - for products like potato, cucumber and onion, the company also engages third parties to produce to its specification, adding a small manufacturing-adjacent revenue stream without owning the production assets.
- Gujarat-anchored, seasonally pulsed - operations are concentrated in Gujarat and revenue rises and falls with India’s crop seasons and monsoon timing, so the business is inherently lumpy across the year.
Group structure and partners
Spright Agro stands alone - no subsidiaries, no joint ventures, and since FY21 no promoter shareholding - but its key managers control several private companies in adjacent spaces.
- Standalone entity - the company has no subsidiaries, associate companies or joint ventures, and operates as a single-segment, single-entity business.
- No promoter on the register - the original promoter, Laxmi Edifice Private Limited, sold its entire 27.2% stake off-market in March 2021; since then the shareholding has been entirely public.
- Manager-controlled sister entities - key management personnel, primarily Managing Director Akshaykumar Patel and Apurvkumar Patel, exercise control over JMJ Communication Private Limited, Starchart Shipping and Marine Services Private Limited, and Aarniya Import and Export Private Limited.
- Former related parties - in earlier years the company transacted with City Crops Agro Limited, Kenrik Industries Limited and Ardi Investment & Trading Co Ltd, and two entities - Xoroton Commercial Trade Pvt Ltd and Torextron Ventures Private Limited - ceased being related parties in March 2024.
