Amines & Plasticizers Ltd Business Overview - SOIC x StockScans Report

as of Jul 2026

Amines & Plasticizers Ltd is a speciality chemicals maker whose products are the invisible workhorses inside oil refineries, pharmaceutical plants, textile mills, and electronics factories - the amines and solvents that strip out impurities, catalyse reactions, and make fibres possible. Founded in 1973 as a first-generation venture by Hemant Kumar Ruia, it was the first Indian company to indigenously develop methyl diethanolamine (MDEA), a critical gas-treating solvent, and has since grown into one of the world’s largest producers of N-methyl morpholine oxide (NMMO), serving customers across more than 85 countries. The recurring approach is to build proprietary, hard-to-copy chemical know-how in-house - for every product except ethanolamines, the technology comes from its own R&D - and then sell those molecules globally into industries where switching suppliers is slow and expensive.

Business segments

Four chemical engines built on a single manufacturing backbone - a gas-treating franchise that cleans the world’s refineries, an ethanolamine business that dominates its home market, a morpholine platform that enables greener textiles, and a specialty ethoxylates engine feeding everything from cosmetics to electronics - plus a small oilfield-and-engineering division that rounds out the portfolio.

1. Gas treating chemicals and specialty solvents: the refinery’s cleaning crew

APL makes the solvents that strip carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide out of gas streams in refineries, fertiliser plants, and hydrogen production units - and it was the first Indian company to do so with its own technology.

2. Alkanolamines and alkyl alkanolamines: the domestic champion

APL supplies roughly 70% of India’s ethanolamine demand - the nitrogen-containing alcohols that go into everything from cement additives and water-treatment chemicals to pharmaceutical raw materials.

3. Morpholine and derivatives: the green-textile enabler

APL is among the world’s largest producers of NMMO, the solvent that makes Lyocell fibre possible - a cleaner alternative to viscose that has reshaped the textile industry.

4. EO/PO-based specialty products: the formulation toolkit

Using ethylene oxide and propylene oxide as building blocks, APL makes ethoxylates, polyols, and copolymers that become surfactants, polyurethane systems, and performance additives for a widening set of end markets.

5. Oilfield chemicals, industrial gases, and engineering services: the ancillary workshop

A compact division that supplies hydrogen-sulphide scavengers and corrosion inhibitors to upstream oil and gas, plus dissolved acetylene and custom pressure equipment from a separate site at Khopoli.

Manufacturing, technology, and R&D infrastructure

Two integrated plants in Maharashtra, 13 reaction chemistries under one roof, and a DSIR-recognised R&D lab that has commercialised 43 new products in five years - this is the shared backbone that makes every segment possible.

Group structure and partners

A lean structure centred on a single listed entity with one overseas subsidiary in the UAE, a 26% stake in a captive solar-power venture, and technology partnerships with American and Japanese multinationals.
