Astral Ltd is a company built on being first - it introduced India’s first CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, a high-temperature plastic) pipes and first lead-free PVC pipes, and it has spent three decades turning that instinct into a portfolio of building-materials businesses that now reach from bathroom taps to industrial adhesives. It began in 1996 as a plumbing specialist and has since expanded by repeatedly spotting products that were mostly imported or had little organised competition in India, then making them itself - often by going further backwards than anyone else, right down to the raw material. That pattern - pioneer a category, then deepen control over its supply chain - is the thread that runs through everything the company does.
Business segments
Three engines at different stages - a plumbing cash cow that is about to make its own raw material, a fast-growing adhesives-and-chemicals platform being carved out into a separate listed company, and a young paints business built on acquisitions - each extending the same distribution network.
1. Pipes, tanks and bathware: the plumbing core that makes its own inputs
Astral sells more than 56 different plumbing products through 13,000 towns, and it is building India’s first captive CPVC resin plant so it no longer has to import its most important raw material.
- First to market, again and again - the company introduced India’s first CPVC pipes and fittings, first lead-free uPVC pipes, and first CPVC fire-sprinkler fittings with ISI certification, which means it has decades of brand recognition with plumbers and builders before competitors arrive.
- Backward integration into the molecule - a 40,000 metric-tonne CPVC resin plant is under construction at Santej, with trials expected by December 2026 and commercial output in early 2027; the plant is designed to double easily and, the company says, will cost roughly a fifth of what rivals have spent on similar capacity.
- A product for every pipe in the building - the range spans CPVC for hot water, PP drainage systems (three tiers, from a dense cast-iron replacement to a retail-grade PVC alternative), PEX-aluminium composite pipes for concealed high-rise plumbing, OPVC pipes that substitute for ductile iron in municipal water supply, and a patented electrofusion drainage system that competes with imported gabit systems.
- Decentralised plants, centralised trust - 6 manufacturing units spread across India put production close to demand, and every CPVC pipe carries two unique codes that a layman can verify to check authenticity, batch, plant and originating distributor - a system that took over two years to build.
2. Adhesives, sealants and construction chemicals: the second engine, soon to be a standalone company
What started as an adhesive acquisition 13 years ago is now a multi-chemistry business selling through more than 2 lakh retail touchpoints, with a demerger planned to list it separately.
- Nine chemistries under one roof - the division makes epoxy adhesives and putties (the original product), PVA white glue, rubber adhesives, anaerobic engineering adhesives, tapes, silicone sealants, instant adhesives and waterproofing compounds, giving it a presence across bonding, tiling, coating and plumbing-ancillary jobs.
- Built by buying and then scaling - entry came through the 2014 acquisition of UK-based Seal It Services and Kanpur-based Resinova Chemie; since then, a large automated plant at Dahej (39,000 MT capacity) has been added, cutting raw-material costs through bulk buying and improving batch consistency.
- Rural reach through a dedicated channel - a “New Bharat” vertical clubs retail, construction-chemical and wood-adhesive products into a single sales force targeting villages with populations of 2,000-10,000, where 69% of India’s population lives.
- From trade push to consumer pull - the Bondtite brand appointed Ranbir Kapoor as its ambassador in 2025-26 and entered modern retail, while a network of more than 70,000 active professionals (plumbers, carpenters, contractors) drives specification at the job site.
- Market leadership where it matters - the company says it is the number-two Indian player in adhesive sealants and holds the top position in solvent cements, the glues used to join plastic pipes.
3. Paints: the third leg, rebuilt from scratch
Astral bought a South Indian paint company, threw out its formulations, and launched a new decorative range under its own brand - using the same logic that paints and construction chemicals travel together.
- Acquired, then reformulated - a 51% stake in Gem Paints (Karnataka, 36,000 kilolitre capacity) was taken in 2022, but every formulation was redone from scratch against top Indian benchmarks before the “Astral Paints” brand launched in 2024.
- Dual-brand geography - “Astral Coatings” sells in western and central India (successful launches in Gujarat and Rajasthan), while the legacy “Gem Paints” brand continues in the South, where it has over 3,000 dealers and strong recognition.
- Dealer-first, painter-first - the company gives its own tinting machines to loyal dealers and launched a painter-and-contractor loyalty app on day one, betting that the influencer at the mixing bench is as important as the shopkeeper.
- Phase one is decorative; phase two goes industrial - the current range covers interior and exterior emulsions, waterproofing paints, primers, putties and enamels; wood coatings and marine coatings are planned next.
Group structure and partners
A composite scheme announced in June 2026 aims to demerge the chemicals business into a separately listed entity and fold a recently acquired fittings maker into the parent - but the plan is under independent review following stakeholder feedback.
- The demerger logic - the Chemicals Business Undertaking (adhesives, sealants, construction chemicals, putties and allied products) would move from Astral Limited into Astral Chemie Limited, which already houses the paints business, creating a single listed chemicals platform with focused leadership and mirror shareholding.
- Fittings brought in-house - Al-Aziz Plastics, acquired for ₹33 crore, makes electrofusion and compression fittings, irrigation sprinklers and solar accessories (4,690 MT capacity); under the scheme it would be amalgamated into Astral Limited to sit alongside the plumbing business.
- Raw-material control deepened - an 80% stake in Nexelon Chem was acquired in November 2025 specifically to manufacture CPVC resin, the main feedstock for the pipes division.
- International adhesives outposts - wholly owned Seal IT Services in the UK (recently returned to positive EBITDA after a turnaround) and its US subsidiary sell sealants, foams and waterproofing products, with a step-down Irish entity handling EU regulatory requirements.
- Specialty chemicals entry - Astral Chemie acquired a 60% stake in Differentiated and Sustainable Solutions LLP in June 2026, gaining technology for polyamines, bismaleimides and benzoxazines used in electronics, aerospace and composites (5,200 MT capacity).
