Avantel is an Indian defence-electronics company that designs and builds its own communication and radar systems for the armed forces, owning the intellectual property rather than competing on manufacturing scale. Founded in 1990 by Dr. Abburi Vidyasagar, it has spent three decades moving from wireless products into software-defined radios, satellite terminals, and radar - all developed in-house by its R&D wing. The recurring approach is to develop customised, state-of-the-art products for specific Indian defence requirements, often securing a captive buyer through government innovation schemes before a product is even built.
Business segments
Two engines at different stages - a defence-communications powerhouse that is the entire standalone business, and a healthcare-device subsidiary still in its consolidation phase - both built on the same in-house R&D philosophy.
1. Communications and Signal Processing: the defence-electronics core
Every rupee of standalone revenue comes from indigenous communication and radar systems sold to the Indian military, space agency and railways - products the company designs, certifies and manufactures itself.
- Built, not bought - all products are developed through indigenous R&D with no technology imported in the past three years; the R&D centre is government-recognised and spent ₹1,739.69 Lakhs in FY26, about 7.86% of turnover.
- Radios that define themselves - the company makes Software Defined Radios (SDRs) across HF, VHF and UHF bands for land, sea and air platforms, compliant with SCA 4.1 architecture, and has already received orders from DRDO and other defence entities.
- Satellite links for ships and helicopters - its Mobile Satellite Services terminals work on Indian geostationary satellites with anti-jamming capability and are supplied to the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and shipbuilders; it also developed SATCOM systems for Lockheed Martin helicopters being delivered to the Indian Navy.
- The iDEX captive-market advantage - under the Innovations for Defence Excellence scheme, the company has won the maximum five challenges in the space domain, which means the procuring agency must buy a minimum quantity from Avantel after successful development, creating a sole-source pathway.
- From trains to fishing boats - beyond pure defence, the engine delivered 6,300 loco units for Indian Railways' Real Time Train Information System under a ₹125.68 Crore contract from L&T, and supplies fishing transponders to the Department of Fisheries through NewSpace India Limited.
- Three plants, one moat - a Visakhapatnam facility handles production of MSS, UHF radios and HF systems; a new Hyderabad E-City facility (operational October 2025) houses R&D, radar work and a satellite Assembly, Integration and Test unit; and a Vijayawada plant under construction will build antennas up to 11 metres in diameter.
- Certifications as barriers - the company holds AS9100:2016 (aerospace quality), ISO/IEC 27001:2022 (information security), NABL-accredited in-house environmental testing, and other defence-grade certifications that new entrants cannot easily replicate.
2. Healthcare Services: a medical-device bet in waiting
A wholly owned subsidiary building respiratory and surgical devices from a dedicated MedTech Zone facility - still in consolidation, with no standalone revenue contribution disclosed.
- A separate company, a separate factory - Imeds Global Private Limited was incorporated in September 2021 and operates from a 2-acre, 36,000 sq ft facility at the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone in Visakhapatnam, equipped with clean rooms and testing infrastructure.
- Respiratory and surgical portfolio - products under development include disposable skin staplers and removers, a non-invasive ventilator that was at an advanced stage as of FY23, a patient monitor, and a syringe pump.
- Import substitution play - the subsidiary has been granted a manufacturing license for surgical staplers and removers, and plans to launch respiratory and other import-substitution products.
- Still finding its feet - the facility was scheduled to become operational from June 2025 but the inauguration was postponed; products including ventilators and patient monitors were expected to be certified during FY25.
Group structure and partners
A promoter-led holding company with one subsidiary, deep family management, and a network of global defence relationships.
- Promoter-driven, professionally overseen - the Abburi family (Dr. Abburi Vidyasagar as Chairman & MD, Smt. Abburi Sarada and Shri Abburi Siddhartha Sagar as Whole-Time Directors) collectively held 40.36% as of FY21, while independent directors include a retired R&D head from Bharat Electronics and a retired LIC Managing Director.
- One subsidiary, fully owned - Imeds Global Private Limited is the only subsidiary, with Avantel holding 100% of its equity and having invested ₹1,175 Lakhs as of March 2023.
- Global partners on specific programmes - the company plans to procure a ground station antenna from Safran of France, has supplied helicopter SATCOM units to Lockheed Martin for Indian Navy platforms, and collaborates with L&T as a lead system integrator on railway projects.
- Employee ownership aligned - two Employee Stock Option Plans (2023 and 2025) together cover up to 90,00,000 equity shares.
