Axis Bank is a private-sector universal bank - it takes deposits and lends them onward to individuals, small businesses, and large companies, while earning fees from payments, wealth management, and trade services. It started in April 1994 and has since grown into India’s third-largest private bank by assets, deposits, and advances, serving roughly 54 million customers through more than 1,01,300 employees. The recurring approach that explains everything else is a framework the bank calls “GPS” - Growth, Profitability, Sustainability - launched in 2019, which pushes it to build a resilient franchise by deepening customer relationships, digitising relentlessly, and cross-selling across an integrated “One Axis” ecosystem of banking and subsidiary businesses. # Business segments Five engines at different stages - a retail banking cash cow that funds the rest, a wholesale and commercial lending engine that converts corporate relationships into fee income, a payments and cards franchise that owns the rails, a wealth management platform for India’s affluent, and a rural banking bet that extends the model into semi-urban and village India - all stitched together by a shared digital and AI backbone. ## 1. Retail Banking: the deposit-and-lending engine that funds the franchise **A granular, predominantly secured loan book funded by one of the best retail deposit franchises among large Indian private banks - the relationship, not the product, is the unit of economics.** - **Deposits come first, and they are sticky** - the bank’s CASA ratio (the share of current and savings accounts, which cost almost nothing) stood at 40% as of March 2026, among the best across large peers, and 69% of savings accounts are opened through tablet-based banking, so the cost of acquiring a customer keeps falling. - **Lending to people it already knows** - 79% of personal loans, 76% of loans against property, and 66% of home loans go to existing-to-bank customers, which means the bank underwrites against a transaction history it already holds rather than relying solely on credit scores. - **Secured assets anchor the book** - roughly 73% of the retail loan book is secured by collateral such as homes, vehicles, or gold, with home loans carrying an average loan-to-value of just 63%, so the bank has a cushion even if property prices fall. - **Fee income is granular and recurring** - retail fees from third-party product distribution, cards, payments, and asset servicing made up 72-74% of total fee income, and in Q4 FY26, granular fee was 92% of total fee, which makes earnings more predictable. ## 2. Wholesale and Commercial Banking: the corporate engine that converts balance-sheet heft into fee streams **A high-grade corporate loan book paired with a transaction-banking franchise that commands market-leading shares on India’s payment rails - lending opens the door, but moving money and managing trade keep the relationship profitable.** - **The corporate book is built for safety, not just scale** - 91% of the domestic corporate loan book is rated A- and above, and 68% is rated AA- and above, while the BB-and-below funded exposure was 0.14% of customer assets in March 2026. - **Transaction banking is the real moat** - the bank holds a 37% market share in NEFT volumes, 27% in IMPS volumes, 11% in foreign letters of credit, and 8.5% in RTGS by value, which means it sits on the payment flows of a large slice of corporate India and earns fees on every transaction. - **SME and mid-corporate lending is the fastest-growing slice** - the combined commercial banking book (SME, mid-corporate, and small business banking) grew at a 26% compound annual rate over five years to reach 24% of total loans, and the bank’s incremental market share in MSME credit over that period was 9.3%. - **Small business banking runs through the branch network** - roughly 79% of the small business banking book originates from branches, and 87% of the working-capital portfolio qualifies as priority-sector lending, which helps the bank meet regulatory targets while earning commercial returns. - **Digital platforms lock in corporate clients** - “Neo for Corporates” is a cloud-based internet banking platform that integrates payments, trade finance, forex, and treasury into a single interface, and the bank’s developer portal offers over 135 open-banking APIs so companies can embed banking directly into their own systems. ## 3. Credit Cards and Payments: the merchant-and-spend franchise that owns the checkout **India’s largest merchant acquirer and fourth-largest credit card issuer, with a UPI payer market share of roughly 36% - the bank earns a fee on both sides of every digital transaction.** - **It owns the terminal at the shop** - with a 22.4% market share in merchant terminals as of February 2026, the bank is the largest acquirer in the country, and its 26 lakh-plus terminals processed ₹4,466 billion in throughput. - **Cards are a relationship tool, not just a lending product** - 74% of the credit card portfolio is to salaried customers, and 91% of cards are issued through digital or phygital channels, so acquisition cost is low and the bank can cross-sell loans, deposits, and insurance to the same customer. - **UPI is a volume game the bank is winning** - as a payer PSP (the bank that processes the transaction when a user sends money), Axis holds roughly 36% market share by both volume and value, with the lowest technical decline rate among the top 50 UPI remitter banks, which makes it the preferred partner for apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and WhatsApp. - **Co-branded cards bring built-in demand** - the Flipkart Axis Bank credit card alone has 4.1 million cards in force, and the bank launched two IndiGo co-branded cards in Q4 FY26 to capture travel spending, so customer acquisition is partly outsourced to partners with large existing user bases. - **The merchant proposition goes beyond payments** - the “One Axis” merchant offering bundles payment terminals with business loans, gold loans, current accounts, and insurance, and the bank’s “Digital Dukaan” ecosystem digitises the store itself, which makes switching to a competitor harder. ## 4. Wealth Management: the affluent-and-ultra-rich franchise that monetises savings **The third-largest wealth manager in India, built in less than a decade, managing ₹6.78 trillion in assets - it earns fees by distributing third-party products on an open-architecture platform, not by pushing proprietary funds.** - **Scale came fast through the Burgundy brand** - the franchise serves over 18.5 lakh clients and families, supported by more than 580 relationship managers across 350-plus branches, including in Tier II and Tier III towns where new wealth is being created. - **The ultra-rich get a dedicated private-banking layer** - Burgundy Private covers 16,453 families with assets under management of ₹2,39,545 crores, operates across 52 cities, and counts 40 of the Forbes 100 richest Indians as clients, which gives the bank a seat at the table for succession planning, estate advisory, and multi-generational wealth transfer. - **The platform is open, so advice is the product** - the bank distributes third-party mutual funds, insurance, and structured products rather than manufacturing its own, which aligns the wealth manager’s incentives with the client’s and generates fee income that is capital-light. - **The NRI corridor is a distinct growth lane** - more than 450 dedicated NRI relationship managers in branches and 300 virtual RMs serve the diaspora, and the bank’s Gift City unit is building a wealth proposition for NRI investors who want to route money into India. ## 5. Bharat Banking: the rural-and-semi-urban bet that extends the model into village India **A 2,924-branch rural network that uses lending - farmer finance, gold loans, microfinance - to open deposit relationships in markets where banking penetration is still thin.** - **Distribution is physical-plus-partnership** - 47% of the bank’s branches are in rural and semi-urban areas, and the network is supplemented by 20,922 Common Service Centre village-level entrepreneurs and 310 business correspondent outlets, so the bank reaches 685 districts without building a branch in every village. - **Lending leads, deposits follow** - the rural loan portfolio of ₹1,02,580 crores grew at a 19% compound annual rate over five years, and the bank explicitly calls its rural strategy “asset-led liability,” meaning it uses loans to farmers, mandi traders, and micro-enterprises as the hook to bring in current and savings accounts. - **The product suite is tailored to the agricultural cycle** - farmer finance (37% of the rural book) covers crop loans, dairy, poultry, and horticulture, while gold loans (13%) provide liquidity against jewellery, and the bank has digitised the tractor-loan journey end-to-end, cutting turnaround time by over 55%. - **Partnerships multiply reach without multiplying cost** - tie-ups with India Post Payments Bank, Airtel Payments Bank, ITC’s agribusiness network, and 25-plus agri-tech and fintech partners have delivered over ₹30,000 crores in cumulative disbursements and opened more than 9 lakh liability accounts over three years. # Digital and AI backbone **A 2,600-person in-house technology team, an AI operating model certified to the ISO 42001 standard, and a mobile app rated 4.8 stars - the bank builds its own digital plumbing rather than renting it.** - **“open by Axis Bank” is a digital bank inside the bank** - the app contributes roughly 6% of the bank’s overall business, offers over 250 services, and has about 16 million monthly active users, while the Axis Pay app extends digital payments to roughly 18 million non-Axis customers. - **AI is embedded in operations, not just in marketing** - the AXIOM operating model delivered 65% AI-assisted sanction-letter generation, 115 million-plus AI-led document services, and roughly 86% of employees using the internal AI assistant “Adi,” which processed 3.2 million-plus queries in FY26. - **The bank runs its own payment rails** - a dedicated cloud infrastructure for UPI transactions keeps technical declines at zero for the remitter bank, and the in-house payment gateway delivers an 87% success rate with 99.9% uptime, so the bank does not depend on a third party for its most critical transaction flow. - **Data underwriting replaces guesswork** - proprietary machine-learning scorecards powered 82% of retail loan disbursals as early as FY22, and the bank’s credit models show a 40%-plus lift in GINI scores over bureau scores, which means it can lend to customers a generic scorecard would reject. # Group structure and partners **A “One Axis” ecosystem of eight domestic operating subsidiaries - spanning asset management, investment banking, retail broking, life insurance, and a fintech platform - that together earned a combined profit after tax of ₹2,051 crores in FY26 on an investment base of ₹3,812 crores, a return of roughly 54%.** - **Axis Asset Management Company** (75% owned, with Schroders Plc holding 25%) manages a quarterly average AUM of ₹3,59,601 crores and serves roughly 13.9 million client folios, giving the bank a 4.4% share of the mutual-fund market. - **Axis Capital** (100% owned) is a full-service investment bank that is amongst the leader in the Full-Service Investment Banking, with 303 stocks under coverage covering 72% of India’s market capitalisation and an active mandate pipeline of over 100 deals. - **Axis Securities** (100% owned) runs the “Axis Direct” retail brokerage with a customer base of 7.09 million, and the bank has sourced roughly 5.84 million of those customers from its own deposit base. - **Freecharge** (100% owned) is the group’s fintech arm, operating a payments and merchant-acquiring platform with a growing micro-loans and microfinance business that expanded to 220 branches and roughly 30 cities in FY26. - **International presence** is limited and trade-linked - the bank operates branches in Singapore, Dubai (DIFC), and Gift City, with representative offices in Dhaka, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, and its Gift City unit executed India’s first aircraft-financing deal through an international banking unit.
