Key Takeaways
- Strong Q1, margin dip is mix-driven: Revenue grew 25.27% YoY to ₹5,533 crores, but EBITDA margin slipped to 25.83% against a 28% full-year guide, solely due to product mix variation in the quarter.
- Order inflow on track, not a slowdown: Q1 inflow of ₹3,754 crores looks soft only against an inflated base; last year's Q1 absorbed spillover from a delayed Jan-Mar quarter, a backlog that did not exist this year.
- The pipeline is deep and near-dated: Management expects first orders for QRSAM, Shatrughat, Samaghat, Shakti Phase 4 and HAMMER all within this financial year, adding heft to the ₹55,000+ crores inflow target.
- Indigenization is the margin shield: A formal five-year zero-import policy aims to insulate BEL from material cost escalation, while rising R&D spend is framed as a margin-sustainability lever, not a drag.
- What to watch next quarter: CCS clearance for QRSAM, the AMCA RFP submission by mid-August, and whether the product mix normalizes enough to pull margins back toward the 28% exit rate.
Q1 Performance: The Mix Story
- Revenue delivery: Topline grew 25.27% YoY to ₹5,533 crores, driven by execution across LRSAM, MPR Arudhra, Lynx U2, Akash and Himshakti systems, among others. Management stated Q1 met internal expectations and whatever was planned was more or less executed.
- Margin mechanics: EBITDA margin at 25.83% fell below the 28% full-year guide, but management was emphatic that the decline is attributable to product mix variation, not input cost pressure. Quarterly swings between 25% and 31% are normal, and the yearly guidance is maintained.
- Raw material spike is optical: The sharp sequential and YoY increase in raw material cost (8% to 10%) is also a function of product mix; material cost typically runs around 55% of revenue and can drift 3-4% either way depending on what ships in a given quarter.
- Other expenses fell: Other expenses declined ~20% YoY because provisions for liquidated damages were elevated in Q1 FY26 (tied to prior-year delivery schedules) and that impact was absent in Q1 FY27.
- Receivables and cash flow: Receivables days improved to ~140 days as of 30th June from 176 days as of 31st March; cash flows are good.
Manoj Jain: "Definitely yes. We have variability of 25% to 31% EBITDA margins based on the product mix in quarter-to-quarter etcetera, but at the year end, let me again assure you, we will cross 28%."
Order Inflow & The Pipeline
- Q1 inflow in context: ₹3,754 crores of orders booked in Q1 FY27 compares to a higher Q1 FY26 figure that was inflated by spillover from a delayed Jan-Mar quarter. This year, the Jan-Mar quarter had no such backlog (actual orders landed at ~₹30,000+ crores vs a guided ~₹25,000 crores), so Q1 inflow is as planned.
- Full-year target intact: Management sticks to the ₹55,000+ crores order inflow guidance for FY27, with QRSAM included. The inflow is expected to be evenly distributed across Army, Navy and Air Force.
- QRSAM: Only CCS approval is pending; all inputs from BEL's side are complete. The order is expected by September 2026. The first order is spread over seven to eight years because of First Off Production Model evaluations; subsequent orders of similar quantities can be supplied in three to four years.
- Near-term program triggers: First orders for Shatrughat and Samaghat (around ₹9,000+ crores combined) are expected in 3 to 6 months. Shakti Phase 4 (around ₹2,000 crores) and HAMMER (around ₹2,500+ crores) are also expected this financial year.
- NGC and P75I: At least one of these two is expected with 100% probability; more than 50% probability of getting both, pending CCS approval.
- Large platform timing: NGC, QRSAM and similar large platform orders are in the order-acquisition target for this year, not the execution plan for next year. They will start generating big turnover after two years. Smaller base orders with 12-18 month delivery schedules will drive this year and next year.
- Project Kusha: Order expected to be ₹40,000+ crores (minimum ₹28,000-29,000 crores as previously indicated), but testing of M1 interceptors is ongoing and integrated testing with radar and control center will follow. RFP for commercial activities will come after evaluations; management says it is "still a long way to go."
- AMCA: BEL and L&T have arrived at internal pricing and sub-module clarity; two senior-level meetings held, one more to finalize before submitting the RFP response. The submission deadline has been extended to 27th August 2026.
Manoj Jain: "Just CCS only is waiting for all of us and hopefully, when CCS meets, I think they will clear QRSAM. Our side all inputs, every activity is over from all of our side."
Execution & Program Updates
- LRSAM delivery: Major quantity is scheduled this year after a very small quantity last year. Leftover activity is around ₹3,000+ crores; the majority will be supplied this year, with some few hundred crores possibly slipping to next financial year. No delays.
- Tejas LRU supply: BEL has supplied more LRUs than HAL requires per the contract delivery schedule; no Tejas delay is due to BEL's LRU supply. The bottleneck is engines, not BEL's electronics. If HAL were to ask BEL to go slow, the impact would be a shift of ₹200-300 crores by a few months, less than 1% of the ₹30,000 crores plan and absorbable. As of now, HAL has not indicated any slowness.
- Netra 2: BEL participated in the bid ~1.5 years ago but was not L1; Adani Defence became L1 and system integrator. BEL's subsystem-level capabilities in Radar, EW and Data Links will still be used by DRDO and Adani.
- Missile domain entry: BEL is entering the missile domain, collaborating with private players as a DcPP partner in 2-3 programs. BEL's electronics expertise in complex subsystems gives it future business opportunity, though exact quantities are difficult to predict as they are a strategic call by the Government of India.
- DEW solutions: The 2-kilowatt laser-based DEW solution has seen orders over the last 3 years, with ~80% supplied. A microwave DEW prototype is ready jointly with DRDO but still under evaluation. Customized configurations have started for export, with demos given to some countries showing keen interest.
Manoj Jain: "In some program, somebody will be competitor, somebody will be L1, somebody will be L2. So, in this particular program, Adani became L1 and they are the system integrator for this program. But of course, subsystem level modules or capabilities of BEL will be made use of."
Margins, Costs & Indigenization
- Full-year margin confidence: Management is confident on maintaining margins in FY27 and expects to cross 28% EBITDA at year-end. Supply chain contracts and the indigenization drive are expected to shield against material cost inflation in FY28-29.
- Employee cost ratio: Expected to remain around 12% of turnover despite the upcoming wage revision, as turnover growth will absorb the impact. The quantum of the January 2027 wage hike is not yet known; committees at the government level guide that process.
- R&D as margin enabler: More than ₹2,200 crores allocated for R&D this year. Management argues that higher R&D investment makes EBITDA margins more sustainable over time by creating niche technology, rather than compressing them.
- Capex: More than ₹1,200 crores allocated for production infrastructure.
- Indigenization policy: BEL will formally release a policy targeting zero import of any module or sub-module (barring semiconductor components) within the next five years, including verification, validation and certification as form-fit replacement. Special budgets have been allocated for this drive. Continuous indigenization is expected to compensate for material cost escalations.
Damodar Bhattad: "We expect the employee cost to turnover to be in the range of around 12% even in the coming years also, which is now also 12% last year. In the coming years also, we expect it to be in the range of 12% employee cost to turnover percentage since the turnover will also be growing in good scale."
Exports & Non-Defence
- Export ambition: BEL aims to reach 10% of revenues from exports in the next five years, working systematically toward that goal. Internal export guidance for this year is around USD 30 crore.
- Defence-non-defence mix: Currently at 90:10.
- Counter-drone market: BEL is focusing on large high-power laser-based or microwave-based DEW solutions with hard kill (D4 systems), while also working on D2 and D3 products and collaborating with startups. Management sees growth prospects for all players and positions BEL as the de facto leader in large complex domain solutions.
Manoj Jain: "We want to finally aim at 10% of our revenues through export. So, we are working systematically to see that we reach that goal in next five years."
