- Competent Automobiles is a family-run Maruti Suzuki dealership that has spent decades selling and servicing cars across a widening arc of North India. What began as an authorized dealership for Delhi, Noida (UP), Haryana and Himachal Pradesh has grown into a multi-state network stretching into Jammu & Kashmir, with the next generation already working inside the business. The recurring approach is simple: secure a territory from India’s largest carmaker, build showrooms and workshops inside it, and earn money at every stage of a vehicle’s life - from the first sale to every service visit that follows.
Business segments
Two engines that feed each other - a high-volume showroom business that puts cars on the road, and a quieter after-sales engine that earns steady income from keeping them there.
1. Showroom: the new-car engine that builds the customer base
The company buys Maruti Suzuki vehicles in bulk, sells them to retail customers across its authorised territories, and finances the entire pipeline through bank credit lines - it is a volume game played on thin margins.
- Franchise gatekeeper for a territory - the company holds an authorised dealer agreement with Maruti Suzuki covering Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of Uttar Pradesh, meaning no other dealer can sell new Maruti cars inside those boundaries.
- Paid when the car leaves the lot - revenue is recognised at a single point, typically when the vehicle is dispatched or handed over to the customer, so the income statement tracks deliveries, not orders.
- Inventory funded by banks, not the company - vehicles are bought from Maruti Suzuki using an Inventory Funding Facility of Rs. 220 crore with HDFC Bank and an Electronic Dealer Financing Scheme with Bank of Baroda, so the company’s own cash is not tied up in unsold stock.
- Used cars as a side bet - the company also sells pre-owned vehicles, including certified units with warranties, and in Himachal Pradesh it once used a commission agent model that kept its own profit at Rs. 3,000-4,000 per car while the agent took the rest.
- Showroom footprint is still expanding - new outlets have opened in Salhawas (Haryana), Sector 85 Noida, and land has been acquired in Gurugram and Rohtak for future dealership infrastructure, while the Board has decided to serve the Jammu & Kashmir territory through a wholly owned subsidiary for which in-principle approval has been granted.
2. Service & Spares: the steady after-sales business
Once a car is sold, it comes back for years - for repairs, parts, insurance claims and extended warranties - and the company earns a higher margin on every one of those visits than it did on the original sale.
- Repair work that locks in loyalty - the service department fixes vehicles and sells replacement parts and accessories, and because satisfaction with the workshop strongly influences whether a customer buys their next car from the same dealer, the service bay is effectively a retention tool.
- Revenue per vehicle multiplied after the sale - after a salesperson closes a deal, the after-market team sells extended warranties, undercoating, insurance and financing packages, which together greatly increase what the company earns from each car.
- Insurance companies are the main debtor - trade receivables in this segment come from accidental repair claims where the insurer, not the customer, pays the bill, so collection depends on insurance-company processes.
- Less vulnerable to a downturn - the service business is described as more resilient than new-vehicle sales when the economy slows, because people repair their existing cars even when they postpone buying a new one.
- Workshop network growing alongside showrooms - new workshops have opened in Najafgarh (Delhi), Dhankot and Sohna (Gurugram), and a combined showroom-and-workshop facility in Naida, Uttar Pradesh, all adding service capacity in the territories where the company already sells cars.
Group structure and partners
The company is a single listed entity with one subsidiary, controlled by the Chopra family and surrounded by a cluster of related private firms - but its entire operating business depends on one manufacturer relationship.
- One subsidiary, one new territory - Competent Kashmir Automobiles Private Limited was incorporated in March 2024 as a wholly owned subsidiary, after receiving in-principle approval from Maruti Suzuki for a dealership in Srinagar, extending the group’s reach into Jammu & Kashmir.
- Family at the controls - Raj Chopra is Chairman and Managing Director, Kavita Ahuja is Whole-Time Director, and her son Abeer Ahuja joined the digital marketing department in 2023, making succession a visible part of the governance structure.
- A web of related entities - directors and key personnel also control a collection of private companies and proprietorships spanning construction, hotels, film enterprises, leasing and wellness ventures, and in 2022 the company invested roughly Rs. 22 crore for a 6.44% stake in Raj Chopra & Company Pvt. Ltd., which runs a five-star hotel in Mussoorie and is developing another in Goa.
- One manufacturer, no alternatives - the entire dealership business rests on the franchise agreement with Maruti Suzuki India Limited; the company has no other vehicle-manufacturer partner and no manufacturing capability of its own.
- Listed but tightly held - the company trades on the Bombay Stock Exchange, has its long-term debt rated by CRISIL, and maintains a three-executive, six-independent director board alongside a professional management team including a CEO, CFO and company secretary.
