Finolex Industries is India’s largest PVC pipes and fittings maker, and the only one that makes its own PVC resin - the raw material that becomes the pipe. The company was founded in 1958 and spent over four decades doing “just this one thing,” choosing depth over breadth by building a resin plant that turned a pipe manufacturer into a backward-integrated operation controlling both the raw material and the finished product. That integration is the recurring logic of the business: own the molecule, make the pipe, and sell it through a network of dealers who reach every farmer and builder in the country.
Business segments
Two segments that feed each other - a resin business that supplies the pipes business and sells the surplus outside, and a pipes-and-fittings business that converts that resin into products sold through a pan-India dealer network.
1. PVC Resin: the raw-material engine that makes backward integration real
The company makes the primary ingredient for its own pipes, insulating itself from supply shocks and giving it a cost and quality edge that standalone pipe makers cannot replicate.
- Captive supply, market pricing - Resin produced at the Ratnagiri plant is transferred to the pipes business at market rates, so each segment stands on its own commercially even though the pipes business gets assured supply of consistent-quality resin.
- A single 272,000-tonne plant by the sea - The Ratnagiri facility sits on a 650-acre site with its own cryogenic jetty for importing ethylene dichloride (EDC) and vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), the chemical feedstocks that become PVC resin.
- The spread decides the margin - Profitability in resin turns on the PVC/EDC delta - the gap between what PVC sells for and what the key raw material costs - and prices are adjusted to track import parity, so the company is exposed to commodity swings only for a short lag.
- Its own power, its own certifications - A 43 MW captive power plant at Ratnagiri keeps manufacturing costs down and supply steady, while the plant holds ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and Responsible Care® certification alongside the standard quality certification.
2. PVC Pipes & Fittings: the brand that reaches the farmer and the plumber
A portfolio of over 2,000 SKUs sold through more than 30,000 retail touchpoints, built on a simple promise - install the pipe and forget about it.
- Two big customer groups, shifting mix - About 65% of pipe volume goes to agriculture (irrigation, borewells, casing), and 35% goes to non-agri uses like plumbing, sanitation, and construction; the company is deliberately pushing the non-agri share toward 50% because it carries higher margins.
- Sold through dealers, never direct - Every pipe and fitting moves through a B2B2C model: the company sells to 900-plus dealers who in turn supply over 30,000 retail outlets, and no sale goes straight to a builder or end customer.
- Four plants, room to grow - Manufacturing is spread across Ratnagiri, Urse, Bhadalwadi (all in Maharashtra), and Masar (Gujarat), with total capacity of 470,000 tonnes per year; the company prefers to squeeze more output from existing lines by swapping in higher-capacity machines before building new plants.
- Fittings made in-house now - A dedicated fittings plant in Talegaon, Pune, began commercial production in March 2023 with 12,000 tonnes of annual capacity, funded entirely from internal cash, closing a gap in the portfolio.
- Marketing that speaks the local language - Brand-building runs on cricket sponsorships, cinema integrations in Tamil and Telugu films, plumber loyalty programmes, and a print campaign across 19 states with a claimed readership of 2.7 crore, all anchored by the tagline “Peedhiyan Badlengi, Pipe Nahin” - generations will change, the pipe won’t.
Group structure and partners
The company is a single legal entity with no subsidiaries, two small associates, and a net cash position that funds everything internally.
- No subsidiaries - Finolex Industries Ltd operates as one standalone company with no subsidiary companies, but has two associate companies, keeping the structure simple.
- Two associates, one dormant - Finolex Plasson Industries Private Limited is consolidated in the company’s accounts; Pawas Port Limited, in which the company holds just under 50%, has not started operations and is treated as immaterial.
- Solar power locked in for 25 years - In March 2024, the company bought a 15.3% stake in a Hinduja Renewables vehicle that will supply 8.36 MW of solar power to its Urse and Ratnagiri plants from a 14.3 MW solar plant in Parbhani, Maharashtra, with the shares held for the full 25-year power-purchase term.
- CSR through a family foundation - All corporate social responsibility runs through the Mukul Madhav Foundation, a charitable trust founded in 1999 that operates across 24 states and 4 union territories and even has an office in London.
