Greenlam Industries is one of the world’s three largest decorative laminate manufacturers and Asia’s biggest - a company that began in 1993 with a single plant in Rajasthan and has since transformed into a six-category interior-materials house spanning laminates, plywood, veneers, flooring, doors, and chipboard. It became an independent listed entity through a demerger between 2014 and 2016, then launched a near-doubling of its three-decade gross block through a ₹1,500 Cr expansion programme across FY24-FY26, entering entirely new product segments and geographies. The recurring approach is to build a “hero brand” that competes on quality, warranty protection, and trust rather than on price - a philosophy management calls its “price-value proposition”.
Business segments
Four engines at different stages - a global laminates cash cow that funds the rest, a premium plywood business scaling toward break-even, a chipboard mega-plant in its first year, and a collection of niche surfacing brands unified under one roof.
1. Laminates: the global cash engine that built the company
A 24.5-million-sheet capacity spread across four Indian plants, exporting to roughly 120 countries and holding an estimated 17%+ share of India’s organised laminates market - this is the business that generates the profits to fund everything else.
- Four factories, one integrated site - laminates are made at Behror (Rajasthan), Nalagarh (Himachal Pradesh), Prantij (Gujarat), and Naidupeta (Andhra Pradesh), with the Naidupeta facility purpose-built near a port to produce larger-format sheets for export markets with shorter lead times. The Prantij plant was acquired from Bloom Dekor in 2022 for ₹36 Cr and subsequently upgraded to 5.4 million sheets per annum.
- Brownfield, not greenfield, for the next leg - a two-press-line expansion at Naidupeta will add 2 million sheets and boards by Q4 FY27 without requiring new civil construction, energy infrastructure, or resin capacity, because all of that was built into the original site. No fifth laminate plant is planned.
- Exports are the larger half - international sales contributed 53.7% of laminate revenue in FY26, and the company has been India’s largest laminate exporter for sixteen consecutive years, accounting for nearly one-third of the country’s laminate exports. In Europe, the model is “inch-by-inch” share gain from local producers through distribution and supply-chain reliability rather than relying on market growth.
- Premiumisation lifts realisations - the range spans commodity 0.5mm sheets to 25mm compact panels for restroom cubicles and façade cladding, plus specialty products like anti-viral, fire-rated, and exterior-grade laminates. Average laminate realisation was ₹1,144 per sheet in FY26, and the business achieved a 17.2% EBITDA margin in its strongest quarter, ahead of a 16% steady-state guide.
2. Plywood: the premium bet in a ₹30,000 Cr market
A calibrated, warranty-backed plywood brand built on India’s largest single-location plywood plant, expanding state by state from its South Indian base toward a national footprint.
- Largest single-location plant in India - the Tindivanam facility in Tamil Nadu has an installed capacity of 18.9 million square metres per annum and sits close to the agroforestry wood belt spanning three states, securing raw-material access. It uses DECA-EDGE technology for precision calibration, which matters because 100% calibrated plywood is essential for mechanised furniture manufacturing.
- Premium-only positioning - the product range runs from Marine grade with a 25-year warranty to Fire Guardian with a 30-year warranty and E0 emission norms, deliberately avoiding the price-sensitive mass market where unorganised players dominate.
- Geographic rollout, not a national launch - the business started in five South Indian states and expanded into Maharashtra, Central India, and East India during FY26, adding Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Land has been acquired in Uttar Pradesh for a northern plant, but investment timing is tied to revenue growth in existing markets.
- Loss-making but approaching break-even - capacity utilisation reached 36% in FY26 for the plywood business, up from 26% the year before, and management expects EBITDA break-even in FY27. The business onboarded over 3,400 ecosystem partners including carpenters and contractors to build the distribution muscle.
3. Chipboard: the single biggest bet, now in its first full year
A 67-acre integrated plant in Andhra Pradesh - India’s largest continuous-press chipboard facility - entering a ₹5,000 Cr market dominated by subscale producers, with exports beginning in its second month of operation.
- Built for scale from day one - the Naidupeta chipboard plant has an installed capacity of 2,92,380 cubic metres per annum, uses German continuous-press technology, and makes its own resin in-house for supply security. The Andhra Pradesh government approved incentives of up to ₹352.82 Cr, partly contingent on a further ₹250 Cr investment by March 2029.
- First-year traction - in FY26, its first full year, the plant produced 1.1 Lakh CBM at 39% utilisation, reaching roughly 49% by Q4, and generated ₹212.8 Cr in revenue. The company claims it was among the top chipboard brands in India by value within that first year.
- Exported from month two - chipboard is now sold in over 10 countries, with the Greenlam MFC footprint reaching 18 international geographies, leveraging the same distribution network that carries laminates.
- Premiumisation is the ramp path - a high moisture-resistant variant (Hydro Strong) launched in Q3 FY26, and the range won the INTERZUM Award for High Product Quality 2025, developed with Italian and European surface-texture partners. The plant is expected to take three to four years to reach full utilisation.
4. Surfacing solutions: veneers, flooring, and doors under one Mikasa roof
Three niche, domestically manufactured categories - decorative veneers, engineered wooden flooring, and engineered wooden doors - each holding a distinct market position and now unified under the Mikasa brand.
- India’s largest decorative veneer brand - manufactured at Behror with 4.2 million square metres of annual capacity and over 750 SKUs, the veneers business generated ₹123 Cr in FY26 and is building specification-driven demand through architect and designer programmes that onboarded nearly 1,600 professionals during the year.
- The country’s only domestic engineered-wood-flooring manufacturer - also at Behror, with 1 million square metres of capacity, the flooring business competes against imports by offering 4-7 day delivery, up to 30-year warranties, and products engineered for Indian climate conditions, including a fire-retardant solution. Marquee installations include Trump Towers, Hyatt Hotels, and the Central Vista project.
- India’s first organised engineered-door maker - the Behror door plant has 120,000 units of annual capacity and sells ready-to-install door-and-frame sets, including fire-rated doors tested for up to 120 minutes and certified by Exova UK. The business is relationship-driven: historically, 60% of revenue came from just 23 repeat clients among major real-estate developers.
- Brand consolidation is the thread - during FY26, Decowood Veneers became Mikasa Decowood Veneers, and the entire surfacing portfolio now sits under Mikasa alongside plywood and a repositioned laminate line, creating a single consumer-facing identity across interior categories.
