- GLP-1 market demand: The patent expiry of semaglutide presents a substantial generic opportunity in India, supported by over 100 million diabetic, 125 million pre-diabetic, and approximately 50 million obese individuals. Diabetic product consumption grew 15.7% over the last three months, compared to 7.8% when excluding the impact of GLP-1 treatments.
- Generic market expansion: Despite price cuts from the innovator, generic competition is expected to expand the market significantly, and Lupin plans to pursue oral semaglutide and other anti-obesity drugs through genericization and in-licensing.
- Supply chain pressures: Geopolitical tensions and shipping disruptions have caused shortages of key raw materials like chemicals and solvents, alongside surging freight costs. This will create short-term margin compression and necessitate internal belt-tightening before costs can potentially be passed on.
- Biosimilars growth outlook: Regulatory shifts—including interchangeability and the use of biomarkers in place of pharmacodynamic studies—are broadening the biosimilars market. Lupin expects to benefit as an established early entrant with existing manufacturing capacity.
