- Oncology exposure: MedPlus sells very little oncology medicine—less than 0.1, 0.2% of overall sales—so the margin rule’s impact on the company would be negligible.
- Pricing approach: Reddy favored letting the market work rather than changing MRPs or margins, arguing that a level playing field, transparency and competition can bring prices down. He cited MedPlus’s 50 to 80% discounts as a competitive choice.
- Drug margins: Reddy said margins of 70 and 90% are not uncommon in retail, pointing to glasses as an example. He argued that low patient numbers and limited sales volumes can mean higher margins are needed for cancer drugs, and said health insurance should cover patients facing those costs.
- Generic economics: He distinguished patented drugs, where a sole manufacturer may warrant pressure to reduce costs, from generics that others can make. He cautioned that manufacturing, selling and reaching doctors and patients involve costs, and that demand is limited.
- Quality concerns: Reddy said India has some of the world’s lowest drug prices and argued the discussion focuses too heavily on price rather than quality. He pointed to cases of fake medicines being detected among retailers, distributors and factories.
