- PCBL Chemical Ltd is fundamentally a carbon black manufacturer - the fine black powder that reinforces and strengthens nearly every tyre and rubber product on the planet - that has spent six decades parlaying the cash and know-how from that core into a multi-chemistry specialty-chemicals platform. Born in 1960 as Phillips Carbon Black Limited in technical partnership with Phillips Petroleum of the US, it has since shed its original name twice, acquired India’s largest phosphonate producer, and launched a next-generation battery-materials venture, all while remaining the flagship enterprise of the diversified RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group. The recurring approach is visible across every chapter: take a hard-to-replicate industrial process, run it at scale with captive green power, and then move into adjacent chemistries where the same plant-operations discipline and global customer relationships can be reapplied.
Business segments
Five engines at different stages - a hydrocarbon cash cow, two consumer platforms at national scale, and a green-energy bet under construction - each built with the cash flows of the one before.
1. Carbon Black: the reinforcing agent inside every tyre
The world’s sixth-largest carbon black producer runs five coastal plants in India, ships to over 50 countries, and feeds its own furnaces with off-gas that generates more power than the plants consume.
- Over 110 grades for rubber and beyond - the product range spans tyre blacks (from super-abrasion N100 to semi-reinforcing N700), performance blacks for industrial rubber goods like conveyor belts and seals, and specialty blacks that go into plastics, wires, inks, and batteries. Specialty grades carry branded names such as Bleumina for engineering plastics, Nutone for inks and adhesives, and Energia for conductive applications.
- Feedstock flexibility is the margin lever - roughly three-quarters of the key raw material, carbon black feedstock (a crude-oil residue), is sourced from the US Gulf Coast, but the furnaces can switch seamlessly between four different feedstocks including anthracene oil and ethylene bottom oil, which lets the company chase the cheapest input at any given time.
- Coastal plants double as export hubs - four of the five manufacturing sites (Kochi, Palej, Mundra, and Chennai) sit near ports, giving them convenient access to imported feedstock and efficient outbound logistics for the roughly 40% of volume that is exported. The Chennai plant is a so-called smart factory running on AI, machine learning, and fully automated process controls, with zero liquid discharge and platinum-level green-building certification.
- Formula contracts with a lag, spot sales without one - a large share of volume moves under formula-based agreements with global tyre majors, where raw-material costs pass through with a built-in quarterly delay; in the spot market, cost changes are passed on immediately, creating a natural hedge across the book.
- Europe is the new battleground - the India-EU Free Trade Agreement has opened duty-free access to a roughly 1.5-million-tonne European market that is structurally short of supply, especially after the EU banned Russian carbon black, and PCBL has set up a Belgian subsidiary and seven decanting stations across Europe, Asia and North America to offer just-in-time local delivery.
2. Aquapharm: the water-treatment and cleaning-chemicals platform
India’s largest phosphonate producer, bought for Rs. 3,800 crores in 2024, sells over 275 grades into home care, oilfields, and industrial water systems across more than 70 countries - and 83% of its revenue comes from outside India.
- A top-three global phosphonate player - Aquapharm holds roughly 24% of the global phosphonate market excluding China, making it the second-largest producer outside that country, with four plants in India, Texas, and Saudi Arabia and a total specialty-chemical capacity of 167,000 tonnes.
- Marquee customers with decade-long relationships - the top 50 customers, including Procter & Gamble, Unilever, Henkel, Halliburton, and BASF, have been buying from Aquapharm for an average of about ten years, which creates high switching costs in formulated products where requalification is slow and expensive.
- Home care is the volume anchor, oil and gas is the growth wedge - fabric care, dish wash, and surface cleaners accounted for over 38,000 tonnes of sales in FY26, while oilfield chemicals (fracking, drilling, stimulation) contributed nearly 24,000 tonnes from a global market where Aquapharm holds less than 1% share and is now expanding wallet share in the Permian and Bakken basins.
- Backward integration is the next margin move - the company is exploring setting up a yellow-phosphorus processing facility in the Middle East and substituting some imported raw materials with locally procurable alternatives, aiming to reduce the cost volatility that comes with its current chemical supply chain.
- China’s regulatory tightening is a tailwind - supply-side reforms including VAT rebate cuts and stricter capacity guidelines are expected to lift structural prices across several of Aquapharm’s chemical categories, effectively raising the floor for the entire industry.
3. Nanovace: the battery-materials bet under construction
A joint venture with an Australian technology firm is developing three conductive materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries - nano-silicon, acetylene black, and super-conductive carbons - with a pilot plant ready to start in Gujarat.
- Patented single-step nano-silicon - the Australian partner Kinaltek has developed an electrochemical process that produces high-purity nano-silicon in one stage, avoiding the hazardous chemicals and high carbon footprint of conventional multi-stage methods, and the technology promises to extend battery range by 25-100% and enable charging up to four times faster.
- India’s first backward-integrated acetylene black plant - a technology-transfer deal with China’s Ningxia Jinhua Chemical gives PCBL exclusive know-how to make acetylene black, a high-purity conductive material for lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors, in a global market of roughly 60,000 tonnes where 90% of supply is currently concentrated in China.
- Validation before volume - the pilot plant at Palej is fully equipped with a dry room and strengthened R&D capabilities, and business-development teams are already engaging large battery manufacturers in Europe and South Korea so that product validation can begin the moment commissioning is complete.
- A Delaware subsidiary for North American access - Nanovace Inc. was incorporated in the US in mid-2025 to localise supply chains for graphite-silicon composites and other critical battery materials, positioning the venture for the Inflation Reduction Act era where regional content is increasingly rewarded.
Green power: the captive engine underneath every segment
The off-gas from carbon black reactors fuels 122 MW of cogeneration capacity across all five plants, making the company self-sufficient in electricity and turning a waste stream into a sold commodity.
- Waste-to-wealth at industrial scale - tail gas from the carbon black furnaces is captured and burned to generate steam and power, producing 839 million units in FY26, of which 511 million units were sold to state electricity grids at a net realisation of Rs. 4.24 per kilowatt-hour.
- The world’s first carbon-black company with UN carbon credits - the green-power setup earned Carbon Credits under the Kyoto Protocol, and every plant now carries Zero Waste to Landfill certification with more than 95% of non-hazardous waste diverted.
- Environmental targets with teeth - the company has committed to reduce net CO₂ emissions by 15% by 2030 from a FY21 baseline and to cut specific freshwater consumption by 25% over the same period, with continuous emissions monitors tracking SO₂, NOx, and particulate matter in real time at every site.
Group structure and partners
PCBL Chemical Limited sits inside the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, a Rs. 51,000-crore conglomerate, and operates its three growth platforms through a web of wholly owned subsidiaries and one joint venture, each ring-fenced by geography or technology.
- The parent and its operating arms - PCBL Chemical Limited runs the core carbon black business directly, while PCBL (TN) Limited owns the Chennai plant and the upcoming Andhra Pradesh greenfield project, and PCBL Europe SRL in Belgium handles R&D, manufacturing, marketing, and trading of specialty chemicals and other chemical products.
- Two American beachheads - PCBL Chemical USA Inc. was incorporated in Delaware in mid-2025 to open North American markets for carbon black and specialty chemicals, and Nanovace Inc. was set up separately in Delaware to localise battery-materials supply chains.
- The technology partnership that unlocks acetylene black - a February 2025 agreement with China’s Ningxia Jinhua Chemical provides exclusive technology for conductive carbon black manufacturing, bundled with a proposed raw-material supply arrangement for calcium carbide, effectively compressing the time it would take to develop the process in-house.
