- Poonawalla Fincorp is a technology-led lender that was fundamentally rebooted in 2021 when Rising Sun Holdings Private Limited, a company controlled by Mr. Adar Poonawalla, acquired a controlling 60% stake in the former Magma Fincorp and infused ₹3,456 crores of equity, instantly creating one of India’s most strongly capitalised non-bank finance companies. The recurring approach is a “multi-speed growth engine” philosophy: use high-velocity consumer loans to acquire customers and generate behaviour data, then deepen those relationships with calibrated commercial products, all while running the entire operation on a proprietary artificial intelligence backbone that keeps costs from rising in step with assets.
Business segments
Two engines at different stages-a fast-spinning consumer acquisition flywheel and a calibrated commercial lending book that monetises the relationships the first engine creates-both fed by the same technology and risk backbone.
1. Consumer lending: the high-velocity acquisition engine
A suite of six loan products designed to be a customer’s first formal credit touchpoint with the franchise, generating repayment behaviour data that makes every subsequent underwriting decision smarter.
- Prime personal loans for the salaried elite - launched in August 2024, this product targets employees of top-tier corporates with credit scores above 750 and take-home pay of at least ₹75,000 a month, offering loans from ₹1 lakh to ₹75 lakh at yields of 13-16%. A fully digital variant can put up to ₹15 lakh in a customer’s account in roughly 15 minutes, and by March 2026 a third of all disbursements in this category were straight-through digital with zero human touch.
- Instant small-ticket loans as the digital front door - the existing personal loan book of over ₹11,000 crores serves salaried and self-employed borrowers with tickets of ₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh, sourced overwhelmingly through the company’s mobile app and digital partnerships. Over 90% of these customers are onboarded via the app, making it the primary channel for building the franchise’s customer base at scale.
- Consumer durables as the anchor for emerging India - launched in April 2025, this product puts a pre-approved digital EMI card in the hands of Tier-II and Tier-III households at the point of sale, financing appliances and electronics with tickets as small as ₹5,000 and sanctions within five minutes. In under a year it signed up more than 12,500 retail outlets across 248 locations and was disbursing over 54,000 loans a month, creating a first formal-credit touchpoint that feeds behaviour data into the broader underwriting system.
- Education loans as a gateway to lifetime value - focused on students heading abroad for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, the product offers up to ₹1 crore without collateral and an industry-first instant sanction for loans up to ₹75 lakh. With a distribution network of over 500 consultants across 50 locations, it positions the company to capture decades of banking relationship as those students become high-earning global professionals.
- Gold loans as localised profit engines - a secured product run through 400 dedicated branches, more than 90% of them in Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns across seven states, disbursing at a monthly run rate that hit ₹335 crores in March 2026. These branches are designed as lean, self-sustaining units whose incremental operating costs are minimal, so profitability scales directly with volume.
2. Commercial lending: the calibrated yield engine
A portfolio of secured and semi-secured loans to small businesses, fleet operators, and professionals that participates in India’s real-economy cycles while generating higher yields than the consumer book.
- Loan against property as the balance-sheet anchor - the single largest product at nearly ₹17,000 crores of assets, it lends against residential real estate to self-employed borrowers and MSMEs, with a direct sourcing channel the company calls among the most distinctive in the industry. The business was built from scratch in the second half of FY22 with an end-to-end digital process, and as of Q4 FY22 its SME LAP offering captured \~75% of India’s MSME industry clusters.
- Business loans with a fully digital spine - serving self-employed and small-business customers with tickets from ₹5 lakh to ₹1 crore, this book added an industry-first 24/7 digital variant in mid-2025 that plugs straight into India’s GST, account-aggregator, and credit-bureau infrastructure for straight-through processing.
- Pre-owned vehicles as a secured play on the freight economy - the company claims a leadership position in used-car financing by monthly disbursements, and in March 2025 it extended the same logic to used commercial vehicles, a deeply under-penetrated secured segment where 70% or more of quarterly disbursements are for pre-owned trucks. The commercial-vehicle business has already expanded to 60 locations across 13 states with over 900 channel partners onboarded.
- Mid-market and professional loans as relationship extensions - a ₹9,000-crore-plus book of loans to well-rated corporates and NBFCs sits alongside smaller, specialised books for doctors, chartered accountants, and medical-equipment buyers, all sourced through direct relationships and digital partnerships.
Technology and AI capability
A proprietary, model-agnostic artificial intelligence platform that runs across credit underwriting, customer service, collections, engineering, and human resources-creating the operating leverage that lets assets grow five-fold without a proportional increase in overhead.
- Credit AI that underwrites faster than humans - the Saarthi platform and 50-plus machine-learning models analyse over 5,000 features across multiple data sources, driving 18% of the total loan book through digital AI/ML journeys and lifting underwriter productivity by 34%.
- Customer service that resolves itself - a conversational AI platform is designed to handle 80-85% of voice and chat interactions autonomously, cutting customer wait times by 35-40%, while over 70% of service requests already flow through WhatsApp.
- Engineering copilots that ship product faster - BuildBuddy, an AI coding assistant, delivered six new product builds in a single quarter with a 70-80% productivity uplift, while DARTGenie saves roughly 400 analyst-hours a year by turning natural-language questions into insights.
- Collections run by algorithms and voice bots - GenAI voice bots with intelligent human handoff, behavioural nudges, and speech-to-text integration now sit at the core of the collections system, and over 90% of cash collections have moved to digital payment modes.
- AI consumption that has exploded while costs stay small - monthly AI token usage crossed 30 million, having grown more than a hundredfold year-on-year, yet the company describes the infrastructure cost as “materially small” relative to the measured business savings.
Group structure and partners
The company is the flagship financing arm of the Cyrus Poonawalla Group, controlled by promoter Rising Sun Holdings with a post-QIP stake of 59%, and led by a management team drawn heavily from HDFC Bank’s senior ranks.
- The sole promoter is Rising Sun Holdings Private Limited, an entity owned by Mr. Adar Poonawalla, who also chairs the board; the original founders of Magma Fincorp were reclassified as public shareholders in 2022, leaving a clean single-promoter structure.
- The housing-finance subsidiary Poonawalla Housing Finance was sold to a TPG-affiliated entity, and the general-insurance joint venture with HDI Global was divested to a Poonawalla-group entity to comply with regulatory requirements-streamlining the group into a pure-play lending franchise.
- Managing Director and CEO Arvind Kapil spent over 25 years at HDFC Bank, where he oversaw a mortgage book of ₹7.5 lakh crore and pioneered instant ten-second loan approvals; both executive directors also carry deep experience from HDFC Bank and Bandhan Bank.
