TPL Plastech is fundamentally a factory that makes the bottles, drums and bulk containers that India’s chemical and pharmaceutical exporters ship their products in - it is a packaging supplier riding the wave of manufacturing moving to Asia. The company was set up in 1992 and is three-quarters owned by Time Technoplast, the multinational that first brought the Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) to India and is now the world’s third-largest maker of them. The recurring approach is to borrow the technology and the ‘GNX’ brand from its parent, then place its plants right next to the chemical hubs that need its containers, turning what could be a simple plastic-moulding job into a proximity-and-precision business.
Business segments
A single industrial-packaging engine, built on one material and one manufacturing logic, that serves chemical and pharma customers across three container sizes - from a 50 ml bottle to a 1,000-litre cube.
1. Rigid industrial packaging: the container that ships before the chemical ships
The company makes the full range of rigid plastic containers that industrial customers need to move liquids and powders, from small bottles to one-tonne cubes, and it locates its factories inside the customer’s supply chain rather than just selling them a product.
- Three formats, one material - the product line runs from small packaging (50 ml to 10 litres), through narrow, wide and open-mouth drums (25 to 250 litres), up to Intermediate Bulk Containers of 1,000 litres, all made from polyethylene granules derived from oil and gas.
- The IBC is the high-value anchor - the 1,000-litre Intermediate Bulk Container, sold under the parent’s ‘GNX’ brand, is a reusable alternative to traditional drums that customers are adopting because it costs less to handle, is easier to move, and fits a growing emphasis on sustainability.
- Factories follow the chemical clusters - the company runs plants at Silvassa (three units), Ratlam, Bhuj, Vizag and Dahej, with a new greenfield site being built at Lote-Parshuram in Maharashtra, each chosen to sit inside a major industrial hub so that chemical companies are nearby, cutting working-capital cycles and freight time.
- One customer type, one revenue model - all sales are business-to-business, to chemicals, specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, FMCG and food-products companies, and the company earns its money from one-time product sales - it manufactures a container and sells it, with no recurring service or rental income.
- Demand rides on India’s export shift - the business grows when Indian chemical and pharmaceutical exports grow, and that is being pulled forward by the relocation of chemical manufacturing from China to other Asian countries, including India.
Group structure and partners
The company is a 75%-held subsidiary of Time Technoplast, a multinational that provides the technology, the brand and the global playbook, while TPL Plastech itself has recently added its own subsidiary to extend the same packaging logic.
- The parent is the technology source - Time Technoplast is the third-largest IBC maker worldwide, the first to launch IBCs in India, and a market leader in nine of the eleven countries it operates in, with a focus on replacing metals with polymers in high-performance applications.
- A global footprint the subsidiary can lean on - Time Technoplast has a presence across India, Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the USA, giving TPL Plastech a window into international packaging standards and demand patterns.
- Related-party transactions are part of the operating model - the company buys and sells raw-material components, plastic accessories and inner containers with its holding company, and has proposed a similar arrangement with Avion Exim, another Time Group entity, to secure metal accessories and other inputs needed for IBC manufacture as demand scales.
- A new subsidiary for the next leg - in October 2023, TPL Plastech incorporated Prokube Containers Private Limited as a wholly owned subsidiary, with a proposed business in polymer and composite products that mirrors the parent’s main line.
- A recycling arm was absorbed - the company previously had a wholly owned subsidiary, Ecotech Green Lifecycle Limited, engaged in recycling flexible and rigid plastic packaging; it was amalgamated into TPL Plastech in 2021, and separately, through Time Ecotech Private Limited, the wider group is now building four automated recycling plants capable of processing about 60,000 metric tonnes of post-consumer plastic annually.
