Key Takeaways
- EU-GMP is the entire story: Reinspection completed in May 2026, draft report received with no critical observations, and the formal letter is expected within two weeks. Management calls it the only key risk remaining and the inflection point for the company.
- Q1 was operationally solid but unprofitable: Best Q1 revenue in five or six years, with exports at 84% of operating income, yet PAT loss widened to minus ₹4 crore as planned investments and one-time expenses hit margins.
- FY28 hinges on one certificate: Management expects 30-40% growth in FY28 if EU-GMP arrives, with 60-70% of that growth attributed to EU-GMP alone. Without it, FY27 still grows 10-15%.
- Margins are a leverage story: EBITDA margin fell to 2.6% in Q1, but management projects upper-teens margins at ₹450-460 crore revenue versus similar-to-last-year margins at ₹410-420 crore.
- What to watch next quarter: Whether the EU-GMP formal letter actually arrives within two weeks, the pace of CAPA submission and final approval, and whether Australia supplies begin in the next two to three months as guided.
EU-GMP: The Inflection Point
- Reinspection completed: German and Portuguese regulatory authorities conducted the EU-GMP reinspection in May 2026. The inspection is now complete, and the company has received the draft inspection report.
- Observations are manageable: The draft report contains no adverse or critical observations, only some major and minor observations. Management emphasized that critical observations are what hamper certification, and major observations have been rectified in every prior recertification without affecting product quality.
- CAPA is ready: Based on draft observations shared during the inspection, the company has already prepared a comprehensive CAPA plan and is ready to submit it immediately upon receipt of the final report. Management expects CAPA submission alone to be sufficient for recertification, with no reinspection required.
- Formal letter timing: Management is in constant communication with authorities and has been informed the report should come anytime now. The formal letter was expected in August and remains on that timeline, with arrival expected within the next two weeks from the call date.
- Post-letter timeline: CAPA and final approval are expected to take about two to three months after the formal letter. By end of year, the company should be ready to supply to Europe, with Q4 revenue from Europe possible.
- Supply lag: About two quarters lag is expected between EU-GMP receipt and supply start. If the certificate comes in August, supplies are expected to start in Q4, followed by continuous supply.
- MA linkage: The company does not hold the MAs yet because authorities will not issue MAs without a valid EU-GMP certificate. Once EU-GMP is obtained, authorities will grant the MAs for about 8 to 10 products. Assessor queries have already been answered.
- MA refiling risk: If EU-GMP is delayed beyond 3-4 months, the MA process would need to be redone. With the current timeline, no refiling is needed.
Zulfiquar Kamal: "So, as such, except for this EU-GMP, nothing remains which will be anything to worry about."
Q1 FY27 Performance
- Revenue strength: Q1 reflected healthy revenue growth supported by continued strength in the core pharmaceutical business, described as one of the better Q1s over the past few years and the best Q1 revenue-wise in five or six years.
- Export resilience: Export business remained resilient despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainties in certain regions, contributing approximately 84% of total operating income.
- NIP/OTF normalization: New innovative product portfolio and oral thin film business returned to a normalized level of contribution during the quarter, accounting for approximately 18% of revenue.
- Gross margin: 58.1% gross margin was driven by product mix in the first quarter. Management expects gross margin to remain around 55-58% going forward and will make it more attractive.
- PAT decline: Loss widened to minus ₹4 crore from minus ₹1.9 crore YoY.
- EBITDA margin impact: EBITDA margins were impacted by planned investments including higher employee costs following senior leadership strengthening, increased utility and fuel expenses, and consulting costs associated with EU-GMP remediation financing.
- One-time expenses: Q1 included one-time expenses of ₹1.82 crore: TGA audit of around ₹30 lakhs, European audit-related engagement, repair and maintenance for smooth EU-GMP audit, and MIDC charges of near about ₹1.9 crore. These will not be repeated next quarter.
- Employee cost run rate: The ₹19 crore quarterly employee cost run rate is expected to continue at a similar level, except for one-time items already incurred. Expenses have now been normalized except for a few remaining hires.
- Working capital: Debtors and inventory limits were on the higher side in the current quarter. The company is improving cash flows by increasing debtor collections and controlling inventory levels, targeting debtor days reduction from approximately 100 to 80 days.
- Middle East impact: Some impact was seen in Q1 from ongoing conflict and disruption, but the situation is currently regularizing and not playing a bigger role now. If it worsens, it will definitely have an impact.
Zain Daud: "We did see some impact in the first quarter, but right now, it seems to be regularizing. It is not playing that bigger role... But you can never know, if it worsens, then definitely it will happen have an impact."
Australia & TGA Progress
- TGA audit completed: TGA audited the plant in April. The final inspection report has been received, CAPA submitted, and assessors are now reviewing the CAPA.
- Certification expected: TGA certification is expected in the coming months. Assessors have communicated that as long as the CAPA is in line, the Australian certificate will be granted.
- First order received: The company received an order for one product from Australia. Supplies are expected to start in the next two to three months.
- Market share expectation: Management expects to get a good chunk of the Australia market for the first product and expects more products to come through.
Growth Outlook & Revenue Scenarios
- FY27 positioning: FY27 represents an important transition year. With compliance investments substantially behind, strengthening leadership team in place, and innovation pipeline ready for commercialization, the company believes it is well positioned to enter the next phase of substantial growth.
- FY27 without EU-GMP: Even if EU-GMP does not come in FY27 and is assumed from FY28, the company expects 10-15% growth in FY27 compared to the previous year, not a flattish year.
- FY27 revenue projection: Management projects ₹410-420 crore without EU. Clarity on whether this number will be overshot is expected around Q2 ending.
- FY28 with EU-GMP: Management expects 30-40% growth if EU-GMP is received and supply starts, with full-year FY28 growth of about 30-35% "easily."
- FY28 attribution: At least 60-70% of FY28 growth is attributed to EU-GMP, because that is where the value unlock will happen.
- FY28 revenue estimate: When an analyst suggested approximately ₹500 crores for FY28, management said "you could say that" but declined to commit firmly, saying it would be more conducive to give guidance once EU-GMP is in hand.
- FY28 margin: Management confirmed mid-teens EBITDA margin expectation alongside 30% growth if EU-GMP falls in place.
- Base business growth: Management expects base business and innovative product business to keep continuing to grow over the quarters.
- NIP/OTF aspiration: Aspiration remains to increase the contribution of NIP and OTF product portfolio revenue over the coming years. The platform represents the most significant long-term growth opportunity.
Zain Daud: "I think we would grow at 30-40% if we get EU-GMP and if supply start. That will be the full year for FY28 would be about 30-35% growth easily."
Margins & Cost Structure
- Q1 margin mechanics: EBITDA margin decline to 2.6% was attributed to increased expenditure and top-line impact. Management says expenses "will be settled now" and margins will improve as revenue crosses higher levels.
- Operating leverage point: Higher revenues will trigger better margin profile. Operating leverage kicks in beyond a certain point; once revenues cross ₹100 crores, costs get absorbed.
- FY27 margin outlook: EBITDA margin is projected at last year's level on higher revenue because of increased costs that have come in. If EU-GMP starts from FY28, EBITDA margins are expected to be similar to last year.
- Margin at higher revenue: At ₹450-460 crore revenue, EBITDA margins would be mid-teens or near 13-14%. At ₹410-420 crore, margins would be similar to last year.
- Margin trajectory: Operating margins are expected to move "on the positive side" with increase of NIP and oral thin film products.
- Margin guidance: EBITDA margin is projected to be in upper teens, as previously communicated.
- Cost structure stability: Other expenses are now fixed in nature and will not increase going forward. Analyst noted QoQ costs are mostly similar, with only incremental employee expenses coming in, proportionately offset by gross margin improvement.
- CapEx status: CapEx is mostly completed. Projects are expected to start somewhere in the second quarter, with only normal upgradation expenses remaining. ₹15-20 crores are required to upgrade the enzyme plant and the Nutra plant.
- ROE concern: Management acknowledged the concern about low ROE but framed current revenue as "baseline growth." ROE improvement is expected to follow EU-GMP certification and subsequent revenue growth.
- ROIC expectation: Management believes 15-20% ROIC is achievable, with most returns unlocked once EU is available. Described as a long-term play with no specific timeline given.
Zain Daud: "If we do 410-420, what we are projecting, then we are looking at margins similar to last year. But if we do 450 or 460, then obviously, the leverage kicks in and we are looking at higher EBITDA margins."
Organizational Changes & Strategic Initiatives
- Senior leadership strengthened: Higher employee costs reflect strengthening of the senior leadership team. A business development president has been hired, bringing experience in newer markets where the company was not previously present. More leadership positions are being considered for hiring.
- Organizational restructuring: Ongoing attempt to professionalize and systematize the organization. More developments are expected in organizational restructure.
- Marketing team in Europe: A marketing team has been placed in Europe.
- Inventory build-up: The company is building inventory of API for key products where timelines are estimated to be longer, particularly where APIs are scarce. A just-in-time approach is used for others.
- Alternate site manufacturing: The company has transferred a couple of products to an alternate site as a risk measure. Batches are completed and under stability; once stability completes, supply can begin from those plants. This strategy is limited to a few products and key markets, not a whole strategy for EU-GMP remediation. Primary strategy remains in-house manufacturing.
- Neuraxpharm buprenorphine: Neuraxpharm holds the MA, and their agreement includes launching in the UK. Business plans were put on hold due to EU-GMP remediation. They have given a positive outlook on the product once EU-GMP returns.
- Star product / UK partner: All clarifications and requests for information for the star product have been answered. The company is at the end of procedure, awaiting the MA which will come after EU-GMP.
- UK market share: Management still expects to capture decent market share in at least the UK despite brand products' capacity coming online in 2027.
- Pipeline stagnation: The product pipeline slide has not been updated for the past year or so because products are in the regulatory filing stage. Most queries from authorities have been submitted, and the company is near the end for most filed products.
Zain Daud: "We still are looking to manufacture most of the products in-house because we have the equipment we spent on it. I believe that strategy will be limited to a few products and a few key markets, but not as a whole strategy to kind of look at the entire EU-GMP remediation."
