Fermenta Biotech is one of only three companies in the world that can make pharmaceutical-grade Vitamin D3 from start to finish, a position it has built over 55 years of manufacturing. The company began in 1951 as a toll manufacturer of pharmaceuticals, pivoted decisively into Vitamin D in 1967, and later consolidated its leadership by merging with DIL Limited in 2019, creating a single entity with a large asset base and a singular focus on nutritional wellness. Its recurring approach is to backward-integrate into the critical raw materials its rivals depend on-like cholesterol from wool grease-and then forward-integrate into the finished formats its customers actually use, from fortified rice kernels to spray-dried powders for supplements.
Business segments
Two engines drive the business-a dominant Vitamin D3 and nutritional ingredients platform that supplies 350-plus customers across 60 countries, and a smaller but deeply connected biotechnology and green chemistry unit that makes the enzymes and specialty APIs the company has manufactured for decades.
1. Vitamin D3 and nutritional ingredients: where the company’s manufacturing moat lives
Fermenta is India’s only maker of Vitamin D3 and one of the world’s top three, with a supply chain that does not depend on China and a product range that stretches from the raw cholesterol starting material all the way to finished fortified foods.
- Backward integration into the key raw material - the company makes its own pharmaceutical-grade cholesterol (branded Fermsterol®) from wool grease, so it controls the starting material that other Vitamin D3 manufacturers must buy, insulating it from supply shocks and price swings.
- A multi-compendial, CEP-certified player - Fermenta holds a certificate of suitability from the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines, one of only three companies worldwide with this certification, which is a regulatory passport for selling into European pharmaceutical markets.
- A patented spray-dried format with limited competition - its 100,000 IU/g spray-dried Vitamin D3 powder is protected by a process patent and provides superior stability for pharmaceutical formulations, giving it a differentiated product that competitors cannot easily replicate.
- A plant-based alternative for vegan markets - Fermenta developed VITADEEâ„¢ Green, a Vitamin D3 derived from phytosterols rather than animal sources, and received FSSAI approval in July 2026 to sell it as an ingredient in health supplements and nutraceuticals, opening a new clean-label segment.
2. Integrated biotechnology and green chemistry: the enzyme engine
Fermenta has been making immobilised enzymes for nearly four decades, and its proprietary CAL B lipase and DILBEADS polymer platform let it replace harsh chemical reactions with cleaner, recyclable biocatalytic processes for pharmaceutical and oleochemical customers.
- India’s first PGA manufacturer since 1986 - the company pioneered Penicillin G Amidase enzymes in India, which are used to make beta-lactam antibiotics like ampicillin and amoxicillin, and it continues to supply this established pharmaceutical biocatalyst market.
- A proprietary immobilisation platform - Fermenta developed a library of polymer supports called DILBEADS that hold enzymes in place during reactions, making the enzymes reusable and giving customers a cost and sustainability advantage over single-use chemical catalysts.
- Green chemistry for a COVID-19 antiviral - the company used its in-house CAL B lipase to patent an enzymatic synthesis route for Molnupiravir, an antiviral drug, achieving higher yields with lower solvent use than conventional chemical methods.
- Capacity expansion underway - in December 2025, the board approved roughly Rs. 50 crore for a 75-kilolitre fermentation capacity expansion at Dahej, specifically for CAL-B Lipase and Penicillin G Acylase enzymes, financed through internal accruals and debt.
Group structure and partners
Fermenta operates through a network of wholly-owned subsidiaries in Germany, the US, and the UK that extend its manufacturing and distribution reach, while a newly carved-out subsidiary now houses the environmental solutions business.
- Fermenta Biotech GmbH in Hamburg collaborates with a toll manufacturer in Germany to produce Vitamin D3 500 feed-grade powder for the European animal nutrition market.
- Fermenta USA LLC, formed after Fermenta Biotech USA LLC acquired a majority stake in AGD Nutrition LLC in 2020 and subsequently renamed it, distributes both animal feed ingredients and human dietary supplements across North America, giving the company direct access to its largest export market.
- In September 2025, the environmental solutions division was transferred via slump sale to a newly incorporated wholly-owned subsidiary, Fermenta Environment Solutions Private Limited, for a consideration of Rs. 19 crore, allowing the parent to focus management attention on its core nutrition and biotechnology engines.
- Promoter Krishna Datla holds just over 36% of the equity, and a shareholders’ agreement requires the promoter group to vote unanimously as directed by him, ensuring concentrated decision-making control.
