Orient Paper & Industries is an eighty-year-old Indian paper maker that has quietly reinvented itself around a single, self-reinforcing idea: make paper from bamboo and hardwood grown by local farmers, turn the waste into useful chemicals, and use the cash from both to fund a shift into high-growth hygiene products. Incorporated in 1936 with just one machine, the company now runs an integrated pulp-to-paper mill at Amlai, Madhya Pradesh, where it also operates a caustic soda plant that feeds off the paper-making process - a closed-loop setup that explains its environmental credentials and its cost structure in one stroke. The recurring approach is to take a commodity that others treat as a volume game and layer on value - copier paper instead of notebooks, bamboo tissue instead of conventional white tissue, paper straws instead of plastic - while building a captive raw-material base that gets cheaper and more secure every year. # Business segments Three engines, all anchored to the same mill - a paper business that supplies the raw material for a chemical byproduct, and a tissue franchise that turns the paper business's pulp into the company's highest-value output. ## 1. Paper and board: the integrated mill that feeds everything else **A captive pulp-to-paper operation that makes its own raw material, generates its own power, and recycles its own waste - the industrial backbone on which the tissue and chemical businesses sit.** - **Pulp made in-house, not bought** - the company runs its own pulp mill at Amlai, producing pulp from bamboo and hardwood sourced directly from farmers and its own plantation programme, which means it is not exposed to the price swings of imported market pulp. - **A farm-to-fibre supply chain** - over 16,500 acres of fallow land belonging to more than 8,600 farmers were planted in FY26 alone, and the company provides clonal saplings at subsidised rates with a buy-back guarantee, so the raw material base grows every year while generating income for the surrounding community. - **The mill powers itself** - captive co-generation using coal from the nearby Sohagpur coal belt, supplemented by biomass from the pulping process, covers roughly 60% of power needs, and the company recycles 95% of its cooking chemicals in a closed loop, which keeps input costs predictable. - **Writing and printing is the volume anchor** - this segment still accounts for 62% of paper revenue, with copier paper under the “Orient Platinum Copier” brand growing fast as the company pivots away from notebooks, where a GST quirk had made the economics unfavourable. - **Specialty grades replace plastic** - the mill produces paper for straws, cutlery, earbud sticks, and SOS bags, and its eco-fork paper was adopted across all Air India flights, turning a regulatory push against single-use plastic into a product line. ## 2. Tissue: the high-margin hygiene franchise **India’s first and largest tissue producer, now riding a 10-15% annual market growth with a bamboo-based product range that competitors cannot easily copy.** - **First-mover advantage that stuck** - the company was the first to launch tissue paper in India and the first in South Asia to introduce virgin bamboo tissue, giving it brand recognition and relationships across hospitality, healthcare, and airport channels that later entrants have to build from scratch. - **Bamboo is the differentiator** - sales of bamboo-based tissue rose 275% in FY25, and the company achieved a complete switch from conventional white tissue to bamboo tissue at Mumbai International Airport, a reference customer that signals quality to the rest of the market. - **Pricing power in micro-markets** - tissue prices run about 2% above competition, and when new entrants in western India eroded share, the company simply deepened its presence in central, eastern, and southern markets, where a major key account scaled procurement by more than 55% per month in a single quarter. - **A fourth machine is coming** - a new Tissue-4 line with 23,400 tonnes per annum of additional capacity is expected to be fully operational by September 2028, timed to catch the tissue market’s projected 13% CAGR through 2030. ## 3. Chemicals: the byproduct that became a business **Caustic soda made at the same Amlai site, using inputs from the paper process, and sold into markets that the paper business already understands.** - **Born from the paper mill** - caustic soda is a critical ingredient in the pulping process, so the company built a plant to produce it on site, and the output that is not consumed internally is sold as caustic lye, flakes, chlorine, and bleach to external customers in manufacturing, sanitation, and water treatment. - **Running at full tilt** - the chemical unit hit its highest-ever caustic lye production in FY26, with capacity utilisation at 94%, so the asset is already sweating without needing major new capital. - **A steady, unglamorous demand story** - the Indian caustic soda market is projected to grow at 3-4% annually in the short to medium term, which is modest but reliable, and the company’s integrated setup means it does not need the market to boom to justify the plant. # Group structure and partners **A standalone company inside the CK Birla Group - no subsidiaries, no joint ventures, just one mill and a set of long-standing industrial relationships.** - The company is part of the CK Birla Group, a diversified conglomerate with over 25,000 employees and 46 manufacturing facilities across five continents, whose other businesses include Birlasoft, NBC Bearings, Orient Electric, and AVTEC. - Orient Paper itself has no subsidiaries, joint ventures, or associate companies - it is a single-entity operation with one manufacturing site at Amlai and a non-operational legacy unit at Brajrajnagar, Odisha. - The Chairman, CK Birla, also chairs several other group companies, and the Managing Director and CEO, Anant Agarwal, was appointed in December 2024, bringing fresh leadership to the centennial vision the company calls “Vision Centurion”. - Equipment partnerships run deep - Valmet (formerly Beloit) has been supplying the primary paper machines since 1965, and Thermax provides the boilers, so the technology backbone is built on relationships measured in decades rather than contracts.
