Blue Star is an Indian engineering company that has spent eight decades doing one thing - cooling - and doing it across every scale, from a single room to an entire airport terminal. Founded in 1943 and listed in 1969, it started by designing central air conditioning for buildings and later stepped into residential air conditioners in 2011, repositioning itself as a ‘mass premium’ brand in 2020. The recurring approach is vertical integration: it designs, makes, installs and services its own equipment, which means it captures the full chain from factory floor to after-sales call, and that logic repeats in every business it runs.
Business segments
Three engines at different stages - a project-and-service cash cow that cools India’s largest buildings, a consumer durables platform racing for national scale, and a niche electronics integrator that rides industrial capex - each built on the manufacturing and R&D backbone of the one before.
1. Electro-Mechanical Projects and Commercial Air Conditioning: where the group’s engineering muscle and recurring service income live
Large-scale cooling and MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) projects generate a multi-year order book, while the commercial equipment and after-sales network turn every installation into decades of annuity-like service revenue.
- Turnkey contractor for big infrastructure - it designs and builds entire MEP systems for factories, data centres, metro stations and hospitals on fixed-price EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) contracts, carrying a carried-forward order book of ₹6,923 crore as of March 2026. Recent demand has tilted toward manufacturing plants and data centres, and the business has stretched into railway electrification and rural water supply projects for government clients.
- Sells the air conditioning equipment other contractors install - it makes and sells packaged systems - ducted units, chillers and VRF (variable refrigerant flow) systems - to commercial customers, holding the number-one position in ducted systems and scroll chillers with market shares around 50% and 45% respectively. The product range runs from small 7 HP VRF units to 1,000 TR centrifugal chillers, and all the intellectual property is owned in-house.
- Service is the silent profit engine - it maintains roughly 2 million tonnes of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment across nearly 3,900 towns, handling more than 2 million service calls a year with a target response time of three hours. Because service needs little capital, its operating margins are structurally higher than product margins, even though gross margins are similar.
- International as a custom-design workshop - through a Dubai-based subsidiary, it exports to over 20 countries and is repositioning itself as a CDM (custom, design and manufacture) partner for OEMs in the US and Europe, developing bespoke heat-pump products and shipping commercial orders for three OEMs during FY25.
2. Unitary Products: the consumer-facing brand racing to win India’s under-cooled homes
A late entrant that has grabbed close to 14% of India’s room air conditioner market in just over a decade by selling a ‘mass premium’ promise - premium features at a price the aspiring middle class can finance.
- Built from zero to a million units a year - entering the residential AC market only in 2011, the company crossed 1 million units sold in a year in FY24 and reached an estimated market share close to 14% in FY25, with more than 90% of its buyers being first-time purchasers. It now retails through over 10,000 outlets across 900 towns, and around 17% of room AC sales happen online.
- Engineered for Indian extremes - the flagship AC range is designed to deliver full cooling capacity at 43°C ambient temperature, with heavy-duty models working up to 56°C and hot-and-cold models operating down to -15°C, while super-efficient variants achieve an ISEER of 6.25. The summer 2026 launch alone introduced 125 new models.
- Cold chain from ice cream to vaccines - the commercial refrigeration business is the market leader in deep freezers, storage water coolers and modular cold rooms, holding more than 30% share in each category and close to 40% in the ice cream segment. It supplies fast-food chains, food-delivery platforms and pharma companies, and can store products from -2°C to -80°C for healthcare cold chains.
- Manufacturing scaled to match ambition - room AC production capacity sits at roughly 1.4 million units, scalable to 1.8 million, across a smart factory at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh and two plants in Himachal Pradesh, while a dedicated Wada facility can produce 300,000 deep freezers and 100,000 storage water coolers a year.
3. Professional Electronics and Industrial Systems: a niche integrator riding industrial capex
A small, highly profitable subsidiary that distributes and integrates advanced testing, security and medical imaging equipment for Indian industry and healthcare.
- From distributor to systems integrator - for over seven decades, this business has been the exclusive Indian distributor for international manufacturers of professional electronics, and it now builds customised semi- and fully-automated testing systems using technologies like ultrasonic and eddy-current testing. It runs two customer experience centres where clients can see non-destructive testing and metrology solutions in action.
- Industrial testing rides the Make-in-India wave - the industrial solutions vertical grew in FY26 on the back of strong demand from automotive and steel, as domestic capacity expansion and tighter quality standards drive spending on material testing and inspection.
- MedTech stalled by regulation - the medical imaging business, which distributes and refurbishes MRI and CT scanners from a 40,000 sq ft facility in Bhiwandi, slowed down in FY26 because of unresolved regulatory policy uncertainty.
Manufacturing, R&D and supply chain
Seven factories, four R&D centres and a subsidiary in Japan form a shared backbone that lets the company design, test and build almost everything it sells - from chillers to deep freezers - on its own intellectual property.
- A factory footprint built over three decades - the seven plants include a highly automated smart factory at Sri City (room ACs), a platinum-rated green factory at Wada (deep freezers and cold rooms), and older facilities at Dadra, Ahmedabad and Himachal Pradesh, together covering 100,000 square metres and producing over 300 models across 25 product lines.
- R&D that owns the core technology - the company holds AHRI-certified chiller testing labs - the largest integrated chiller facility in India - and a Japanese subsidiary, while six patents were awarded in FY24 out of 46 applications.
- Supply chain hedged against disruption - key components like compressors and copper tubes are imported from China and elsewhere, but the company actively diversifies through alternate vendors, long-term procurement agreements and backward integration, and participates in the government’s PLI (production-linked incentive) scheme for AC components at the Sri City plant.
